FIRST MESSAGE:

John had the entire forest rigged. Six months alone will do crazy things to a man. In the name of safety and self preservation the former captain had spent those six months setting the whole ten acres to defend his cabin deep in the thick of the woods. Bear traps, spike traps, bells, trip wires - all of it was designed to keep survivors out.

The dead didn't scare Price. Most of the undead had dried up, rotted, and withered away a few months ago. Granted, every once in awhile when he went on a supply run out of the woods along the old fire road to the town, he occasionally came across one mostly intact. They were slow now, their bodies degrading and falling apart into mush under the unforgiving sun.

No, the living were far scarier. He learned from his time in the SAS that men were the real monsters. Even when his team scattered to the four winds, Price didn't forget the lessons he learned leading them.

He missed the damn idiots.

He spent his days not thinking about them. Instead, he patrolled the woods, checking his snares for rabbits and quail. He carried his 1911, but he almost never had to use it. The damn thing was better for scaring bears than for hunting. He didn't like to waste ammo. Old habits. He carried a compound bow and walked on quiet, well-worn boots as he made his early morning rounds one day, his mind sharp despite the tension brewing beneath his skin. A man wasn't meant to be alone that long. He could feel himself getting keyed tighter than a copper coil, ready to spring or snap under the wrong pressure.

If something didn't change, he'd break. He was sure of it.

He gathered two little hares and dressed them right where he found them in the snares. As his bloodied hands cut through sinew and yanked and tore at their hides, the forest was quiet. Birds sang. Insects buzzed. Someone whimpered.

Price froze. That wasn't an animal sound, not unless you considered humans animals - which he did, now. His hands were sticky and tacky with fur and blood as he immediately drew his compound bow and stalked towards the sound. He had a bear trap over there somewhere, he was pretty sure.

He had to clear his throat twice to make something like speech come out. It'd been so long since he'd last spoken to another soul he wasn't sure he even remembered how. What use was a captain with no one to lead?

“Hands up,” he grunted, the words feeling foreign in his mouth as he stepped out from behind a thick elm tree. He aimed the bow at the intruder. His eyes narrowed shrewdly as he took in the sight of them. More importantly, the sight of several dead quail, a rabbit, and vegetables he knew came from his produce garden in the southeast acreage.

“Caught myself a bloody thief,” he growled, aiming the bow at the stranger. Their leg was caught nice and tight on the iron jaws, blood all over the damn place. They must have tripped it during the night and been out there for hours. “Gimme a good fuckin’ reason not t’shoot a new hole into you.”
