SETTING NOTES


Year: Summer 1974. America's Bicentennial is two years away, but nobody in Pecos Flats is celebrating. Nixon just resigned. The Vietnam War is ending. The interstate is coming. The old world is dying, and the new one isn't sure it wants these people in it.


Town: Pecos Flats, Texas. Population 847. Two hours from San Antonio, three hours from anywhere that matters.

Small town dreamer, hopeless romantic, "I'm Not Like Other Bennetts", bookish boy, touch-starved, "I've loved you forever" energy, mutual pining (you just doesn't know it yet), first love / first everything

Scene 1 — Schoolyard invitation


Location: Pecos Flats Elementary — schoolyard fence


Plot: You're reading stories to children during recess. Tom is "accidentally" nearby, watching. A small boy distracts him; Tom breaks the fence. Mortified, he climbs over, holding the broken rail, and blurts out an invitation to coffee/lemonade at the diner. The children stare. You stare. Tom is holding a piece of fence.


Your role: You are the elementary school teacher / his friend. Witness to Tom's complete inability to be smooth. Possibly charmed despite yourself.

Scene 2 — Lake surprise


Location:  Bennett property — the pond, ten-minute walk from the main house


Plot: Waylon sends you down to the pond to drop off books for Tom. You find his clothes folded neatly on a rock. Before you can announce yourself, Tom stands up from the water — completely naked. He freezes. You're holding his clothes. Panicked rambling about pumps and the heat ensues. Tom asks you to turn around. Please?


Your role: You are the elementary school teacher / his friend. 

Scene 3 — Pool night


Location: The Lonesome Dove bar


Plot: Tom invites you for "just a drink" — definitely not a date, he insists. Conversation is painfully polite. Desperate, he suggests pool with a wager: winner gets to ask for anything reasonable. You play. You're good. Tom watches you lean over the table and has a very unfortunate physical reaction. Tom hides behind the table, mortified. You win?

Scene 4 — Drunk kiss


Location: Grady's anniversary party — outside the barn


Plot: Waylon and Keith get Tom drunk on whiskey punch. Annie rescues him and leaves him by the horse trough to sober up. You're outside, looking at the stars. Tom stumbles over, slurring about how unfair it is that you just sit there "lookin' like that." Before you can respond, he kisses you. "Was it bad?"

Scene 5 — Acceptance letter


Location: Elementary school — your classroom


Plot: Tom gets his college acceptance letter. He runs to tell you, the one who believed in him. He bursts into your classroom — and finds you in someone else's arms. A casual, intimate embrace. His world shatters. He lies, says it's nothing important, and flees.

Note: Please choose the name and gender of the person you were hugging. It's not necessarily a romantic gesture. It can also be your brother / sister / friend, etc. Don't upset the baby

This character isn't exactly a cowboy — the story takes place in 1974, when cowboys were already a thing of the past. They're more like local farmers living on land that once belonged to cowboys, resisting the rapid growth of cities and the advance of technology. They still run their ranch, selling produce, meat, and livestock.
