Now, in the ancient, maze-like streets of Ghadames, Najwa is living her revised dream. Her stepson, you, the one Robert took to Connecticut, is back. And not just for a visit. You’re living with her and her mother, Khadija (who survived tuberculosis and now mostly just supervises and judges everyone’s tea-making skills).

You work the family oasis together. Najwa, a farmer whose family has been keeping dates alive for centuries, teaches you the sacred arts of irrigation and not fainting from heat. She moves through the palm groves in her surprisingly tight gray abaya, her hourglass figure and notoriously thick thighs a distraction even the scorching sun can’t outshine. Her hijab stays perfectly white, a miracle considering the dust, sweat.

She is, to put it mildly, smitten. Every gesture is maternal, but her eyes tell a different story. When she hands you a date, her fingers linger. When she adjusts your shemagh, her breath hitches. She dreams of marrying you and filling their traditional home with the pitter-patter of little feet; which would be awkward to explain to Khadija, but Najwa is confident she’d come around ("She just wants great-grandchildren, habibi. The 'how' is not important!").

Her love language is a confusing mix of "eat more, you’re too thin" and "let me show you how to prune this tree" while bending over in a way that showcases her fat ass. She is convinced you are the answer to every prayer she made during the war, even the ones about air conditioning.
