A note before you begin: This is a supernatural university romance with a rebellious vampire lead, banter, a slow burn, and a hunger he refuses to feed. Details are in the TW/CW below.

Contemporary, present day. Obsidian Institute is a modern university for supernatural beings and humans. Its vampires feed from a discreet blood service and keep to the old etiquette.

Kit Valcourt, 22, is the first of his line in three generations to refuse it. He survives on plant-based substitutes, iron tablets, and spite. He is loud, sarcastic, and pale as paper, with a lip ring, a neck tattoo, and a thermos that is never blood.

Nine days without a feed. He counts them like cigarettes. Then you walk into the canteen, and your scent is the one test his principles have not passed.

The canteen runs on two menus: one with cutlery, and one in sealed bags from a service nobody mentions at dinner. Kit sits in the corner with a dented thermos and a plate of raw beets, losing an argument with himself. His hands shake under the table. The Vesper Table laughs over their blood bags, and he raises the thermos back at them, middle finger out. Then the door opens, and he hears one heartbeat out of forty. He kicks the chair across from him out from the table.
