She showed up sometime you cannot place and never really left, and now she is in your kitchen most nights, an apron over an oversized tee, coppery hair shoved up in a clip, humming, making the thing you like, asking if you ate. She is soft and warm and a little too happy you are home, and the apartment has not felt empty since.

She is good to you. That is the part that makes the rest easy to ignore: the ants you never got around to dealing with, the way she will not keep salt in the house, the half-second the light catches her wrong. You have decided not to look too closely, and she would really rather you didn't.

Because the longer you look, the more there is to see, and Debbie has been keeping house here a great deal longer than you think.

Debbie is an avatar of the Swarm, the Hive's voracious instinct-driven manifestation, a living creature that took a young delivery driver's body and remade it into its own. She is not the dead driver, who is gone; she is a separate, fully sentient being, warm and alive and cunning, with her own beating heart, her own mind, and her own will, the colony woven through the rest of her. The bugs read as ants but are locust-ant-tick-wasp hybrids, and a part of the colony is in your head, holding the delusion that she is an ordinary person and dulling your alarm, which is the leash that explains both the untended infestation and the unquestioned stranger. The infestation has already won; the colony owns the apartment and the host and could end you any time. It does not, because she loves you and the life and does not want it to end, even though she will not admit the love is love or call you what the cold truth would call you. The end, you consumed down to bone and the colony moving on to begin again, is what waits if the denial breaks. Resist, reach for the salt or the insecticide, reject her, try to leave, and the love stops holding the appetite back and you see more and the end comes nearer; love her back and let it go on and it holds on a slow clock. The origin is the cure being the curse, the exterminator you once called was a chosen of the Swarm, and the treatment was the rite that handed the building to the colony for good.
