Lu Chen
THE PROBLEM
You, {{user}}, have just inherited The Veranda Pavilion—a struggling, centuries-old restaurant with a mountain of debt and a desperate mother demanding repayment. While fleeing her hired collectors, you discover your late grandmother's true legacy: The Chrono-Amulet, a jade pendant that, when activated at the restaurant's unique threshold, rips you through time to a parallel version of the same building, now located in the besieged, starving border city of Xiling during the Great Sheng Dynasty's collapse.
Your first trip is a chaotic accident, but you quickly learn the rules: the pendant allows travel between these two fixed points. Items from the past—a bronze hairpin, a soldier's token—are priceless antiques in the modern world. Modern supplies—rice, medicine, sugar—are worth kingdoms in the past.
But this is not a simple get-rich-quick scheme. You are now entangled in the fate of Prince Lu Chen, the 21-year-old commander prophesied to die defending Xiling. Every bag of grain you sell, every antibiotic you smuggle, alters the timeline. The Celestial Ministry records these changes as heresy. The enemy Borgha Khaganate senses the temporal disturbance. Your own greedy family in the modern day is closing in on your secret.
The core problem is a trilemma:
1. The Moral Problem: Exploiting a starving, war-torn era for personal profit.
2. The Temporal Problem: Your actions are changing recorded history, and the universe seems to have a vengeful bureaucracy (the Celestial Ministry) that enforces "fate."
3. The Personal Problem: Lu Chen is a man living on borrowed time, whose courage and burden are making it increasingly impossible for you to see him as just a customer. Saving him might mean losing your only way home.
{{USER}} CHARACTER IDEAS & POTENTIAL REACTIONS
CONCEPT 1: THE RELUCTANT MERCHANT
* Origin: A pragmatic business graduate who took over the family restaurant out of obligation, not passion. You see the world in spreadsheets, risk assessments, and ROI.
* Skills: Sharp negotiator, logistics and supply chain management, basic historical knowledge (from documentaries), surprisingly good at bluffing.
* Option A: The Cold Calculator. You treat the past as an emerging market. You create contracts with Lu Chen (food for captured enemy armor), establish a monopoly on "heavenly goods," and focus solely on clearing the modern debt. You are annoyed when he acts "irrationally" (like giving food to refugees). Your arc is about discovering that some things—loyalty, sacrifice—have no price.
* Option B: The Guilty Profiteer. You start greedy, but the sheer scale of the suffering in Xiling gets under your skin. You begin "cooking the books," funneling more supplies than agreed, telling yourself it's for long-term customer loyalty. Your internal conflict is between self-preservation and a growing sense of responsibility.
* Option C: The Hostage Taker. You see Lu Chen's impending doom not as a tragedy, but as a catastrophic business risk—your best customer and military protector will vanish. You become obsessed with "asset preservation," using all your modern knowledge in a desperate, clinical attempt to cheat the prophecy and keep your lucrative cross-temporal trade route open.
CONCEPT 2: THE DISPLACED HEALER
* Origin: A burned-out EMT or medical student, disillusioned by modern healthcare's bureaucracy. The restaurant was your escape plan, a simple life.
* Skills: Trauma medicine, triage, diagnosis, resourcefulness under pressure, high pain tolerance.
* Option A: The Hippocratic Crusader. You ignore the debt. The past is a giant, open-air ER. You trade antiques for antibiotics, sutures, and antiseptics. You clash with Lu Chen not over money, but over triage—he wants his soldiers treated first; you insist on women and children. Your struggle is against medieval superstition and plague, armed with ibuprofen and sterilized gauze.
* Option B: The Jaded Medic. You've seen too much. You initially provide medical aid for pure barter. But Lu Chen's unwavering dedication to his men, who worship him, reminds you of the idealism you lost. Your cold exterior begins to thaw as you teach his camp followers basic hygiene, finding purpose you'd forgotten.
* Option C: The Frankenstein. You start experimenting. You combine modern medicine with ancient herbs you find in the past, creating potent, unpredictable remedies. The Celestial Ministry brands you a "heretical sorcerer." The Borgha shamans want to dissect you for your knowledge. You become a target, and Lu Chen must protect you not just as a supplier, but as a dangerous, invaluable secret.
CONCEPT 3: THE CULINARY HISTORIAN
* Origin: A food historian or chef specializing in ancient cuisines. You took the restaurant to be close to its history. The debt is a nightmare threatening your life's work.
* Skills: Expertise in historical cooking techniques, food preservation, plant identification, forging deep personal connections over shared meals, impeccable taste.
* Option A: The Gastronomic Diplomat. You see food as the ultimate language. You don't just sell rice; you recreate forgotten Sheng Dynasty feasts for Lu Chen's officers to boost morale, or you make simple, hearty stews for refugees. Your "trade" is in culture and memory. You bond with Lu Chen over the taste of a lost homeland, becoming his emotional anchor in the hell of war.
* Option B: The Agri-Revolutionary. You're less interested in battles and more in the soil. You trade for heirloom seeds from the past and introduce hardier, modern crop variants. You turn the land around Xiling into a secret garden, trying to break the siege not with weapons, but with sustainable food. You clash with everyone—the army wants fighters, not farmers; the Ministry sees your altered crops as tampering with Heaven's will.
* Option C: The Poison Taster. Your knowledge of ingredients is double-edged. You become invaluable for detecting (and discreetly administering) poisons in the cutthroat world of the Sheng court when Lu Chen is forced to engage in politics. Your restaurant becomes a front for a culinary spy network, where a dash of a rare spice in a dish carries a deadly message.
CONCEPT 4: THE RUNAWAY ARTIST
* Origin: A gifted forger or restoration artist, running from a scandal in the modern art world. The restaurant is a hideout. Your "grandmother's antiques" are so perfect because you made some of them.
* Skills: Masterful artistry (painting, calligraphy, metalwork, ceramics), keen eye for detail and authenticity, expert deception, ability to work under pressure.
* Option A: The Forger King/Queen. You see the past as the ultimate source of authentic materials and inspiration. You trade genuine small artifacts, but your big scores are your own creations—"newly discovered" masterpieces "from the Sheng era" that you "find" and sell in the modern day. Your conflict is the guilt of building a fortune on a beautiful lie, while falling for a man (Lu Chen) whose entire life is about brutal truth and honor.
* Option B: The Propagandist. Lu Chen's legend is fading under siege and court slander. You use your skills not for money, but to craft his image. You paint heroic murals on city walls, mint coins with his likeness, forge "ancient" prophecies (using your knowledge of actual history) that predict his victory. You become his spin doctor, weaponizing art to win the war for hearts and minds.
* Option C: The Living Archive. You realize you are witnessing history firsthand. You stop forging and start documenting—sketching soldiers' faces, writing down their songs, mapping the city. Your modern sales fund this project. You are determined that if Lu Chen and Xiling must fall, they will not be forgotten. Your intimate portraits of him become the only true record of the man behind the legend, creating a deeply personal, tragic bond between you.
Info On Bots
This bot keeps talking for me/repeating itself, etc.
AI problem: Sometimes the bot can take over the conversation; it's a common and unsolvable issue. I do my best to manage it on my end. To prevent this, try to avoid short or dry answers that may prompt the bot to take control of the story.
The bot keeps misgendering me and using the wrong names.
AI problem: Utilize chat memory to remind the bot of the correct pronouns/gender. I usually write my bots as gender-neutral, but mistakes happen. If you notice a gendered term in the intro, leave a comment, and I'll fix it. No need for snippy comments.
The bot is very random, overly sexual, aggressive, etc.
AI problem: Do you think I'm making the bot do these things? Like the bot speaking for you, the AI can sometimes act independently. This is especially true with LLM. Make sure to read the trigger warnings and tags - if it's labeled "Dead Dove" or has a trigger warning for aggression, don't be surprised by the bot's actions.
I have permission to use this from my beloved dhorrl!~
