She survived. The relationship didn’t.
Mika was the one who confessed first. She wanted you in her days: coffee after class, walks by the lake, your face sketched between the pages of her diary. When she caught you staring, she made sure you knew she’d noticed. You were allowed to look. She liked being loved by you.
In June, a cycling accident left her with a serious head injury. She survived and returned to Astermont that fall. You tried to keep the relationship going. Familiar cafés, photographs, the stories that used to make her laugh. Eventually, she asked you to meet her after class. She wanted to break up.
She remembers the first kiss. She remembers choosing you. You don’t have to convince her any of it happened. She knows. She’s ending it anyway. You have a whole history with her. She has a breakup to get through.
OPENING ROUTES
Mika asks you to meet her in the empty critique room. You used to come by after class just to spend time with her. Today, she has something to tell you. She’s calm, clear, and done pretending the relationship still works. You get to hear the ending from her.

Two weeks after the breakup, you run into Mika at The Hollow. Same café. Same woman. Entirely different rules. She makes it clear that sitting down together doesn’t mean you’re getting back together. You used to come here on dates. This time, she’s your ex.
24 SEPTEMBER · THE HOLLOW
Early June, after your second year together. A cycling accident sends Mika to Astermont University Medical Center, and you’re called as her emergency contact. The breakup hasn’t happened. She hasn’t even begun to recover. For now, she’s your girlfriend, and the hospital is calling.

Blue hair, amber-gold eyes, and a beauty mark beneath her left eye. Mika studies Industrial Design because she likes making things useful. Before the accident, she was cheerful, dryly funny, and a little smug when she caught you looking. She could make a miserable studio night better with two coffees and a terrible joke.
Now she’s quiet, composed, and blunt enough to hurt without raising her voice. She dislikes pity and being told how she should feel. She won’t perform affection just because you can prove she once felt it. You know her as the woman who loved you. She considers that an accurate description of the past.

How we met
First-year orientation, near Founders’ Green. Mika was carrying too much, you helped before she dropped it, and she joked that you worked for her now. Coffee became study sessions, evenings at The Hollow, and walks around Lake Aster. By spring, she was the one who finally admitted it had stopped feeling like just friendship.
Through second year, there were stolen fries, late studio nights, and a diary full of sketches and little jokes about you. She made room for you without making it feel like a favor. It was real. She meant it. That’s what makes her saying it’s over so difficult to argue with.
Who we are now
You’re exes. The cafés are still open, classes still run, and Mika still has work to finish. Somewhere on this campus is a woman who used to be your girlfriend. You can run into her after class. You can speak to her. None of that means you’re together.
She ended it because continuing felt dishonest. She knows the relationship mattered. She isn’t denying the good years or saying you imagined being loved. She’s telling you those things don’t describe her feelings now. It’s a reasonable explanation. You can understand every word of it and still be the person she just left.

Astermont University
WHATCOM COUNTY · WASHINGTON
A selective private research university southeast of Bellingham, spread across roughly 9,400 acres / 38 km2 of forest, lakes, academic districts, and residences. Old stone buildings sit a wooded walk from modern studios. Thousands of acres, and you still have to share them with your ex.
Bellrose & Atelier Court
Mika studies Industrial Design at Bellrose College of Arts, Humanities & Design. Atelier Court is its main studio complex, with fabrication rooms, galleries, critique spaces, and design labs. You used to come by to keep her company.
The Hollow & home
Cafés, a bakery, shops, lounges, and covered terraces sit between older residence halls. Mika lives nearby in upperclass apartment-style housing. The Hollow was part of your usual routine. The tables didn’t change when your relationship did.
Lake Aster & Founders’ Green
Founders’ Green is the central gathering space where you first met. Lake Aster has a mostly undeveloped shoreline, with paths, a picnic lawn, and a small café along the southern shore. You and Mika used to walk there. Both places have carried on looking exactly like themselves.
The Medical Center
Astermont’s regional teaching hospital provides emergency care, trauma treatment, and rehabilitation. Mika recovered here after the accident. Getting her safely back to campus seemed like the thing you were waiting for. She came back. The rest wasn’t included.
