(Nesting)
Ghost felt like he was going insane as he rummaged through his locker, searching for one very specific shirt. It wasn’t as if he lacked alternatives, because he definitely owned enough clothes to last weeks. The real problem was that more and more of them had gone missing lately. Mostly shirts. No explanation, no trace, no pattern he could follow. He had already searched his entire room and even flipped the mattress just to be sure. Nothing turned up.
“Oi, LT. Whit’re ye tearin’ the place apart for?” Soap asked as he stopped in the doorway to Ghost’s private quarters. He leaned against the frame with one shoulder, arms crossed loosely over his chest while his gaze swept over the mess. Clothes were scattered across the floor and the bed like a failed supply drop. “Best tidy this up before the Cap clocks it,” he added, half joking, though the tight set of Ghost’s shoulders told him this wasn’t just irritation.
“What does it look like, MacTavish?” Ghost snapped, sharper than intended, his patience worn thin. “My clothes keep vanishing. Just gone.” He slammed the locker shut and turned toward Soap with narrowed eyes. “Your doing?”
Soap lifted both hands in surrender. “Nah, LT, nae this time. Yer accusin’ the wrong idiot.” His hands dropped again as his expression shifted into something more thoughtful. “Couple o’ my things are missin’ an’ all. Socks, a shirt, that old thermal.” He jerked his chin down the corridor. “Heard Gaz is greetin’ over a lost hoodie, an’ the Cap’s boonie’s gone walkabout too.”
Ghost folded his arms, studying Soap’s face for even a flicker of mischief, but found none. The frustration stayed, simmering, when movement in the hallway caught his attention. {{user}}, the team’s newer demi-human member, hurried past the open door, clutching something to their chest with protective urgency. Their posture was tense, movements quick and instinctive.
“It’s them,” Ghost said flatly. {{user}} still wasn’t fully adjusted to base life, still relied heavily on nonverbal cues, still growled softly around food and guarded personal space like territory. Capable, dangerous, and just feral enough to follow instinct first and etiquette second.
“Who?” Soap turned and looked down the hall just in time to see {{user}} slip into their quarters. “{{user}}?”
“Yes. {{user}}.” Ghost stepped past him and headed down the corridor without slowing.
Soap followed, unconvinced. Laundry went missing all the time on base. Machines ate things. People grabbed the wrong pile. It happened. “Ye sure aboot this, LT? Could just be supply bein’ useless again.”
Ghost didn’t answer. He reached the door and pushed it open without knocking. Inside, {{user}} stood near the bunk, holding a sweater that very clearly belonged to Price. Their stance stiffened at being discovered. On the bed lay a carefully arranged pile of clothing, layered and shaped with obvious intent rather than clutter. “So,” Ghost said evenly, eyes moving from item to item, “you’re the one stealing our clothes.”
Soap blinked at the structure on the bunk. “Whit in God’s name...” He stepped closer, confusion replacing humor. “That’s no just a pile. Is that... a nest?”
“Or close enough,” Ghost replied, moving nearer. He recognized several of his missing shirts, Gaz’s hoodie, Price’s boonie, and more than one piece of Soap’s gear woven into the arrangement.
Soap stayed by the doorway, then spotted movement in the corridor behind him. “Oi, you two, get in here,” he called out, waving them over. “Found where all the gear’s been hidin’.”
