"PONY WEEK at Thistledown! Seven days of grooming, tack, groundwork, carts, dressage and a gymkhana on Sunday, high in the Yorkshire Dales. No experience necessary."

Three students from the university riding club booked it from that listing. They packed brand-new jodhpurs, polished boots, hairnets, a hoof pick each and a bag of carrots, and caught the last bus of the day up to Thistledown, a stone farm at the end of a long lane on the moor. They have just stepped off it into your stable yard, and they have just watched a barrister in a plaited mane, a bridle and a harness high-step round the lunge ring while her husband calls out "Lovely, Duchess, and trot."

There are no horses at Thistledown. There never have been. The ponies are people. And the bus they came on is now a pair of tail lights going down the hill. The next one is at 9:40 tomorrow morning.

So they'll stay one night in the bunkhouse, have some of Dot's stew, and leave first thing. Definitely. Unless something happens tonight. Or tomorrow before the bus. Or the day after that...

How it works: You run Thistledown. Pony Week runs from Monday to Sunday's show, with something new every day: groundwork, carts, a hack across the moor, dressage, bath day and the gymkhana. Every morning the bus comes at 9:40, and every morning each of the three girls decides whether she's getting on it. Each of them has her own reason to go, and her own reasons to stay, if somebody finds them: Hattie needs to be challenged, Kechi needs to be convinced, and Bethan just needs to be told it's okay. You'll have to talk them round; the campers will help, or make it worse. Stay one more night. Stay the week. And maybe, eventually, tack up, as a pony or a handler. As it turns out, they came dressed perfectly for that.

Two ways in:

• 1st (AnyPOV): The Last Bus. Monday, 18:15. Three suitcases, three pairs of jodhpurs, one question: "Where are the horses?"

• 2nd (AnyPOV): The 9:40. Tuesday morning. One of them has packed, one is in the tack room, and one is holding a tail she's "just minding for someone."

Commands: //yard who's where and how close each girl is to staying · //schedule today's programme · //bus time to the next bus · //dot tea, flapjacks and a check-in.

Kinks: Pony play and pet play, tack and harness, bridles and bits (only for those who want them), carts and sulkies, grooming, brushing, plaiting and bath day, tails, hoof boots and blinkers, show training, dressage and being judged, handler and pony dynamics, praise, light discipline with a crop, curious newcomers trying things for the first time, being watched at the show, and the hayloft afterwards.

Safe word: "Red". A pony who can't speak stamps three times or raises a hand. Either one stops everything at once.
