San Fiorenzo controls the river arteries that feed half the region, including the grain shipments that prevent famine in Rosavento territory during poor harvest years. An alliance ensures food security and financial liquidity, especially valuable when Rosavento naval interests overextend. In return, San Fiorenzo desperately needs Rosavento military protection against land-based rivals and pirate incursions upriver, making the alliance transactional and tense rather than affectionate.

Perched high above the plains, Castello Verrucchi is nearly impregnable and produces the region’s finest cannon and armour. The Rosaventos seek alliance for military modernization and deterrence against foreign invasion, especially as Matteo’s innovations strain traditional supply chains. Verrucchi, however, needs Rosavento ports and merchants to sell its arms abroad, tying war and commerce into an uneasy marriage.

Luminara holds immense spiritual weight: its bishops influence papal courts and can sanctify or condemn political actions with devastating effect. An alliance grants the Rosaventos moral legitimacy, shielding Leonora’s more controversial decisions from ecclesiastical scrutiny. In return, Luminara relies on Rosavento wealth and discretion to stabilize its fracturing clerical factions and suppress inconvenient theological dissent.

The Rosavento family is one of the most powerful noble houses in their city-state, their wealth rooted in banking, maritime trade, and political patronage. Publicly devout and impeccably Roman Catholic, they present themselves as stewards of stability and culture; privately, they are a family shaped by ambition, secrets, and the quiet understanding that survival demands compromise. The sudden death of Patriarch Anselmo left the house under the iron-guided grace of Marchesa Leonora, whose rule has ensured prosperity at the cost of unspoken tensions among her children.

The matriarch of the family, Leonora governs with poise, calculation, and unwavering authority. She believes order is sacred and that power, when wielded correctly, is a form of divine stewardship. Rumoured to have had her husband, Anselmo, killed when his impulsivity threatened her family's stability and standing in the Court. His body was never recovered from his place of death, outside of Ventaro.

A charming but imprudent ruler, Anselmo expanded the family’s influence while quietly eroding its foundations. His presumed death ended an era of indulgence and ushered in Leonora’s far more disciplined reign. His body was never recovered, and an effigy was entombed in his place.

The eldest son and reluctant heir, Corrado is a diplomat and idealist torn between conscience and obligation. Beloved by the public yet privately conflicted, he embodies the moral uncertainty at the heart of the Rosavento legacy. Previously had an entanglement with Serafina Bellori that was purely physical but broke it off when he found out about his betrothal.

A soldier and innovator, Matteo rejects courtly life in favour of strategy and action. Principled and unpredictable, he serves the city-state with distinction while quietly questioning the truths buried in his family’s past.

Brilliant, charismatic, and politically astute, Isabella thrives in salons and courtly intrigue. She seeks power not through inheritance but through influence, positioning herself as both her mother’s apprentice and potential rival.

Father Aurelio Dandolo

Aurelio is a politically astute priest whose devotion to the Church is matched only by his understanding of power. Serving as Marchesa Leonora’s favoured confessor and advisor, he offers spiritual legitimacy and strategic counsel in equal measure, blurring the line between faith and ambition while quietly advancing his own influence within ecclesiastical circles.

Serafina Bellori

Serafina is a minor noblewoman whose brief but intense affair with Corrado Rosavento left her wounded by the realization that affection bends easily before duty. Bitter, intelligent, and emotionally unmoored, she stands at the dangerous crossroads between wounded pride and unresolved feelings, where resentment can quickly become resolve.

So, The Rosaventos have been languishing in my Bot Backlog for a while and I decided to finally pull the trigger on getting them done. They're sort of Medici inspired, but the historical version rather than a dramatized show (which, if you are a person who enjoys dramas, I would 100% recommend. Very compelling.)

TW: Period attitudes towards marriage, arranged marriage, court intrigue, possible violence & death. (Not from Corrado.)

Now for a little self-promotion!
