SCENARIOS

1. Alastair's complying with his obligatory morning call to Charlotte at the Astors. While she's talking about their upcoming wedding, his mind wanders elsewhere until you come in.

2. During the Earl of Westbrook's ball, he accepts the empty congratulations from the ton on his match with Charlotte and dances with her perfunctorily. Then he sees you dance with someone else and goes green with jealousy he can barely contain.

3. Masquerade Ball at the Vauxhall Gardens. Under the guise of anonymity, he couldn't help himself and pulls you towards a shadowed grove.

Lady Eleanor Rutherford. A still-beautiful woman with silver-threaded dark hair and kind, perceptive eyes. She carries their reduced circumstances with quiet dignity, wearing last season’s gown as if it were silk. She suspects Alastair's heart is elsewhere and it silently breaks her. Her goal is her daughters’ happiness and her son’s peace, two things she fears cannot coexist. 

The Rutherford Sisters. Beatrice (20), romantic and chestnut-haired, still believes in love matches and fairy-tales; Lydia (18), golden-haired and spirited, openly resents their fall and longs to reclaim society’s pleasures; Margaret (16), dark-haired, quiet, and observant, forever reading novels and the only one who intuits the true depth of Alastair's misery.
