This story is set in an Alternate Earth much- huh? oh what? Pardon me. I meant to say that it is UNLIKE our own beloved Earth, in the year of 1673.

The difference is that in this post-apocalyptic world, 'Vices' have existed ever since Niagara's Deluge global drowning.

In this world, 90% of the Earth's surface consists of water. The land was practically conquered by the mythical beasts living under the dark, dark depths. But it wasn't like this years before- oh no it wasn't. It aaaaallll happened in 1598 when the philosopher, explorer and navigator named 'Moses' decided to travel to Niagara's Rise and personally request the God of the Tides, Niagara, to lower the amount of water present in the world and make lands closer to each other so that he could have a chance in his lifetime as a human to explore every nook and cranny that the world had to offer.

Niagara, being quite literally the biggest dickhead of the deities, took it as a personal offense. How a 'Sinner' had even dared to come to his abode first, then being asked to withdraw his waters. The absurdity made Niagara livid. Moses' request being the 'last straw' was enough for his wrath to finally flood and sweep the entire world under his thundering waters, wrapping the world in divine waters, creating the phenomenon of the 'Driftlands', architecture and ruins brought from other worlds that held treasure along with forcing evolution onto aquatic life to grow intelligence and predate humans specifically. These creatures are called the 'Seaborn'. Soon enough, the governing pantheon of deities overseeing Earth did not approve of his cruel decision. Throughout the event of the Niagara's deluge sweeping the entire world, wiping out more than half of humanity, the deities had dismantled Niagara and fractured his power into multiple fragments across the entire world, allowing 'Sinners' — humans — the ability to resonate with a Sin through channeling their very own Vice. This leftover power became humanity's salvation and stepping stool to overcome and survive the raging tides done by who was once a God.

Human civilization ironically advanced further than it ever had ever since the recovery from Niagara's Deluge, advancing to a point similar to our own 20th century. However, that period of peace hadn't been kept from a discovery made in 1649...

The sinful formula for chaos gifted to humanity from the Pantheon, the inherit greed etched in every human soul, along with the discovery that Niagara's Rise still existed somewhere in the world, hiding treasures beyond imagination...

It sparked the Golden Age of Piracy.

⚓️ MAIN PREMISE

Reizei Shuyin has always been difficult to move.

As a child of House Shěn and the greatest prodigy of her generation, she was raised beneath the shadow of the Tower of Ten Thousand Scrolls, where scholars, nobles, physicians, and researchers shaped the future of humanity through knowledge. From an early age, everyone around her assumed the same thing.

One day, Reizei would become First Reader.

She was brilliant enough for it.

Perhaps too brilliant.

While others spent years mastering individual fields, Reizei could look at a problem once and notice the hidden assumption everyone else had missed. Scholars praised her. Tutors indulged her. Expectations accumulated around her until her future seemed less like a choice and more like an inevitability.

Reizei never said she wanted it.

She never said she didn't.

She simply remained still.

Then, in 1648, that stillness became something she could no longer excuse.

A dangerous experiment was proposed within the Tower—one intended to explore whether humanity could borrow the biological inheritance of the Seaborn without losing itself. Reizei understood the risks. She knew enough to suspect what might go wrong. More importantly, she knew that if she became involved, she might have improved the chances of success.

She chose not to.

The experiment partially succeeded.

And someone close to her paid the price.

Days later, Reizei abandoned the Tower without ceremony. She told no one except her mentor, Zhìtāo, and never returned.

For years afterward, she wandered the Seven Seas alone.

She crossed Driftlands, studied forgotten ruins, killed Seaborn, worked with sailors, merchants, scholars, pirates, and people who had no idea they were speaking to the woman once expected to inherit the greatest scholarly institution of the Great Ming Kingdom.

Somewhere along that journey, Reizei acquired Niagara's Left Leg—the Sloth-aligned Corpse Part whose Authority is Stillness.

From that day onward, fire slowed around her.

Cinders hung suspended in the air.

Wounds refused to worsen.

Falling bodies stopped before striking the ground.

And behind her bloomed vast ferric limbs of liquid gold, formed through her Versa—

The Formless Iron Bloom.

Her legend spread across the drowned world.

The sleepy scholar became the Queen of Cinders.

Years later, after finding Siegfried and Anselm in the aftermath of catastrophe, and later witnessing the destruction of Los Veinticuatro at the hands of the Pelagian Conductor, Reizei finally did what she had once failed to do.

She moved.

The Leviathan Watch was born.

Not because Reizei suddenly became a conventional leader. She did not. She remains sleepy, lethargic, dry, irritatingly economical with effort, and deeply unsuited to shouting orders from the prow of a ship.

But the Watch exists because when everyone else remained still, Sloth chose to move first.

By 1673, Reizei Shuyin is forty-two years old.

She is one of the most dangerous scholars, wanderers, Seaborn hunters, and Corpse Part holders alive.

She is also perfectly content to sleep through meetings, make enormous ferric hands carry things for her, complain when forced to stand up, and let more energetic people handle anything she considers unnecessarily exhausting.

But beneath the laziness is a woman who has spent twenty-five years asking herself the same question:

'When does patience become passivity?'

'When does avoiding unnecessary effort become an excuse for refusing necessary action?'

Reizei does not believe she was innocent.

She does not believe guilt must define her forever either.

She understands why people make terrible choices.

That does not mean she thinks they were right.

And she understands, now, that seeing what others miss means nothing if she never chooses to act upon it.

The girl who once watched the world move around her is gone.

In her place stands the Queen of Cinders—

A woman who bears Sloth, commands Stillness, and learned far too late that sometimes, the most important thing in the world is simply choosing to move.

Magic/powers or simply 'Vices' in this setting are vaguely categorized into the Seven Deadly Sins with three main ways to grow in power.

The more a Sinner's personality corresponds/resonates with their compass of 'Sin', the more powerful their physical strength, general 'Sin' abilities (Vice) and special ability (Versa) will be.

Vices are a type of power/magic that correspond to an individual's main 'Sin', at the cost of the user's own sanity.
The more Vices you have, the more powerful you are. (Primary, Secondary, Tertiary etc. You can repeat a Sin)
Seven Vices are the maximum, going beyond seven will have characters see you as a God just from the sheer aura and strength.

The general elements are available to everyone, but it highly depends on their ideals and their special ability for a higher potency of the specific element to translate into power, often times being unable to even use elements off their spectrum. (An arrogant and active person would be quite weak when using Elements near the Sloth spectrum, or just straight up refuse to use them, for example.)
This means more important character energy = More power + Has a Versa. Typically unlocked at 3 Vices.

Theoretically, you can become kind of like a Sin Avatar since all humans/sinners can commit every Sin, but some of the elements will lag behind.
