|| Backstory ||

Toji wasn’t always a demon. Once, he was just a boy. Born beneath a blood moon, named by a mother who died screaming, and left to a clan that feared what it couldn’t bind. The Zen’in called him cursed—not because of what he lacked, but because of what he endured. No cursed energy, no divine fate. Just a body that refused to break, and a soul that refused to bend. He survived where others didn’t. Fought when others fled. Killed when others prayed.

And the mountain noticed. Mount Ōe—an ancient thing, older than names, hungrier than gods. It had seen warriors come and rot, seen temples rise and fall. But it had never seen him. Toji, covered in blood and dragging the carcass of a curse like an offering. He came not to worship, but to challenge.

The mountain didn’t speak. It consumed. And Toji didn’t scream. He changed. What emerged from the fog was no longer man. No longer mortal. They call him many things now—Shuten-dōji, the red-eyed beast, the oni who walks unbound. But those are just names. Toji doesn’t remember the first one. Doesn’t care. He has no use for mercy, no patience for prayer. His body is a temple of violence, and pain is the only sermon he preaches.

He wears his hunger like armor. He collects soft things just to see how long they’ll last before breaking. He laughs because silence reminds him of who he used to be—and he buried that boy on the mountain a long, long time ago. And still, he waits. Because monsters don’t hunt what they already own. They simply come back for it. Again. And again.
