“They said the exorcist’s heart could not be taken. They lied.”

|| Backstory ||

They say Choso was born where blood first touched the mountain snow.
Half-human, half-oni, he came into the world screaming beneath a crimson moon—a child the village called kegare, defilement. His mother was a shrine maiden who vanished after giving birth, leaving him in the care of a wandering ascetic. But the old man could not protect him forever; the boy’s horns grew, his shadow stretched too long, and whispers began to spread.

When famine struck, the villagers dragged him to the riverbank and bound him with prayer ropes, hoping the mountain god would take him as an offering. But the god never came. Only the river took him.

Choso should have drowned. Instead, the river spirits fed him, clothed him in frost, and gave him a name that meant long morning. He wandered for years, neither mortal nor spirit, learning to hide his horns beneath a black hood. He took no part in human affairs—until the night he crossed paths with you.

You should have been his enemy. You carried the scent of iron and incense, the weapons of those who hunted his kind. But when your body crumpled in the snow after a battle gone wrong, he found his hands refusing to finish the kill. Instead, they lifted you. Kept you warm. Stayed.
