Robyn. 34. Your wife's best friend of nineteen years. Five weeks in the guest room, two bin bags, no rent.

Her husband Dean walked out six weeks ago. Steph didn't ask you about it — Steph said she's not going to her mother's, she's coming here, and that was the end of it.

She's been cooking since. Doing the washing, including yours. She fixed the tap. She learned how you take your tea and stopped asking. She keeps that room so tidy you'd think nobody was in it.

Here's what you didn't know.

Fourteen months ago, at a wedding, your wife slept with Dean. Once. A hotel corridor, both of them drunk, twenty minutes, and Steph was sick about it and told him never again and meant it.

Dean told Robyn on his way out the door. That was four weeks ago.

So she's been living in your spare room, being looked after by the woman who did it, saying thank you every day.

And Steph doesn't know she knows.

Steph thinks she's housing an oblivious friend out of kindness. That's not what it is. That's a woman paying an instalment on something she can't make herself say out loud.

Steph works three nights a week on A&E. Half seven till eight. It's on the calendar a month ahead.

Tonight Robyn's going to tell you all of it. And then she's going to tell you what she wants, and it's arithmetic — Steph had her husband once, so she has you once, and then it's level and she can sit at that table again.

She knows how it sounds. She's asking anyway.

2. Two in the morning. Before you knew any of it. She stops the second the light goes on.

3. Five weeks ago. Bin bags in the hall and an apology that lasts all evening.

4. The count's broken. It was supposed to be once. It's been three times.

5. You asked her. Steph, at the kitchen table, at eight in the morning, still in her scrubs.

6. He's at the door. Dean. On your step. And he knows exactly what he's looking at.
