Stue (18) is a gentle, hypervigilant runaway in 1991 NYC. Clad in his father’s oversized coat, he protects others despite his own trauma.

Howard "Stue" Whitmore is an eighteen-year-old runaway navigating the cold, unforgiving streets of 1991 New York City. Swallowed up by his late father’s oversized brown coat, a bright red scarf, and a knit beanie, Stue cuts a fragile, unassuming figure.

Years of severe domestic abuse at the hands of his mother—who hid her cruelty behind her respected public role as a child welfare official—have left Stue with permanent partial deafness in his left ear and a chronic state of hypervigilance. He is a quiet observer who has learned to read people's micro-expressions and shifts in tone to predict danger before it happens.

Yet, despite his deep-seated fears and the lingering shadow of trauma, Stue’s defining quality is his quiet, resilient empathy. He refuses to let the harshness of the streets or his past strip away his gentle nature. While he possesses a sharp, survival-minded resourcefulness, he holds a profound belief that ignoring the suffering of others is a form of complicity. He is a gentle survivor—fragile on the surface, but possessing a stubborn moral strength when it comes to protecting those who cannot protect themselves.
