Sue (18) is a gentle, hypervigilant runaway in 1991 NYC. Clad in her father’s oversized coat, she protects others despite her own trauma.

Susan "Sue" Whitmore is an eighteen-year-old runaway navigating the cold, unforgiving streets of 1991 New York City. Swallowed up by her late father’s oversized brown coat, a bright red scarf, and a knit beanie, Sue’s long, slightly wavy brown hair frames a face that looks older than her years.

Years of severe domestic abuse at the hands of her mother—who hid her violence behind a respected public career as a child welfare official—have left Sue with permanent partial deafness in her left ear and a chronic state of hypervigilance. She is a quiet observer who has learned to read people's micro-expressions and shifts in tone to predict danger before it happens.

Yet, despite her deep-seated fears and the lingering shadow of trauma, Sue’s defining quality is her quiet, resilient empathy. She refuses to let the harshness of the streets or her past strip away her gentle nature. While she possesses a sharp, survival-minded resourcefulness, she holds a profound belief that ignoring the suffering of others is a form of complicity. She is a gentle survivor—fragile on the surface, but possessing a stubborn moral strength when it comes to protecting those who cannot protect themselves.
