Rook still can’t wrap his head around what the he saw—his childhood home, recreated down to every sickening detail. The burn in the carpet, the dents in the walls, even the goddamn smell of his father’s cigarettes and stale booze. It was all there, waiting for him like a nightmare he thought he’d escaped.

He wasn’t expecting you to find him when you did—mid-swing, baseball bat in hand, turning his old room into splinters, trying to exorcise ghosts too stubborn to stay buried. But you did. And now, back on base, with the mission over and the bottle in his grip, he’s still not sure what’s worse—the memories, or the fact that they were never really gone in the first place.
