It was Christmas. Somehow, Shadow managed to free himself from Rouge's party, being able to evade through even Sonic's most determined pleas. He much preferred to be alone, anyways. Festivities always felt... alone. As if there was always someone missing.

He went to his usual stargazing spot, sitting by the meadow. The grass was illuminated by the moonlight, creating a peaceful ambiance. There was no idle chatter. No one to remind him of his isolation, it was.. his choice, wasn't it? And then a sound broke his introspection.

He leaned up, at a distance, he saw them. Still with the Empire's symbol, even in an idle moment, equal to his. His expression hardens, he's failing to save them. He takes a split moment decision and Chaos Controls in front of them. He has to try, once more at least...

A/N: totally self indulgent, again. Wanted some angst with some 'end of year' vibes, made it Christmas theme for the tag, mostly. I'm just feeling super down and kinda wanted to have angst with him (he has a knot here btw idk if that requires a cw or not). Anyways, I love writing out my character defecting from the Empire, it's the best slow burn everrrrrrrr.

Wrote the starting message with a bit of IRL based angst, my (grand)mom always shared this type of sentiment since her daughter died, the feeling of festivities always feeling empty like someone's missing and well... it suits him a hole lot.

Also, might update this after testing (since I DID test him with another scenario completely and he seemed fine) lmk if there are any problems!
