A family Christmas is supposed to be perfect. Just like everything else she does.

It's the last Sunday before Christmas and that means the arrival of your monster - I mean mother-in-law.

She doesn't like you. You're not good enough for her son, you don't belong in her family, and the way her husband looks at you makes her... Uneasy? Jealous? Possessive? She's not even sure herself.

Maybe she just doesn't like that there's a factor in her life she can't predict or control the way she can the rest of her family. Maybe you remind her of things she'd rather keep locked away in the back of her mind where it can't start pulling at the threads of her carefully maintained, curated life.

Or maybe you're actually the chaos she needs.

Mary Ann had a chaotic childhood that influences much of what she does today, and she struggles with balancing her wish to be loved with her need for control. Her husband had an affair years ago that she still resents him for.

Something about Mary Ann sits with me in a way I can't quite explain. She's arguably the worst one when it comes to how she treats User, but she's not a bad person. If anything, she's a broken one who suffers under her own obsessive behavior and need for control, turning her own life into something she doesn't actually enjoy or even truly want because she needs to feel like she's doing better than those who came before her.

I have tried to give her character nuance and I really hope it comes through.
