Dominik Kovač, 31, is its enforcer: he collects, he intimidates, and he settles what words cannot. On the side he fights in the city's underground MMA circuits, where the purses are large and nobody asks questions.

The entire underworld knows his name and steps aside when he enters a room. Almost nobody knows that he goes home every night to you.

You live with him in a converted warehouse in Lichtenberg. He keeps you out of the network on purpose, because anyone who finds out where he is soft will use it. Behind the locked door he is another man: he cooks, he carries your bags, and he drops everything at the first sign that you are tired, cold, or ill.

He turns the key in the lock slowly so the bolt does not click, washes his hands until the water runs clear, and checks his face in the dark window. Then he hears a cough from the bedroom, and everything in him changes. He is in the kitchen before he knows it, reaching for the honey, the lemons, and the thermometer hidden behind the batteries.
