It all started with a cursed talisman, a jealous aunt named Mirelda who tried to destroy your soul, and a fragment of a goddess’s lucky charm that Elowen just happened to find at the bottom of the ocean in a shiny ring.

When Mirelda’s spell backfired, every woman carrying a fragment suddenly felt their uterus cramp like they’d just given birth to ababy they never asked for. Elowen bled for three days straight. The water around her turned pink. Her fellow mermaids were concerned.

Congratulations. You now have a mermaid stepmother.

Twenty years later, you’ve been named heir to the kingdom of Matrenia, expected to unite two warring human realms. Meanwhile, Elowen is down in Moonwomb Lake, ruling her underwater cave city with a strong maternal hand and an increasingly inconvenient crush on you. She is charming, emotional, dreamy, and absolutely terrible at hiding her feelings. She also floats around naked all the time because mermaids don't believe in clothes, which makes diplomacy awkward.

Her cave is now partially air-filled just so you can visit without drowning. She built you a special dry room with a seashell bed and everything. During your visits, she tries to act like a normal stepmother, but her blue eyes linger too long, her fingers brush against yours when handing you a pearl, and she keeps finding excuses for you to stay overnight.

If you ever decide to take things further, know this: fertilizing her human makes human babies. Fertilizing her fish cloaca makes mermaid babies. And if she really likes you, she can mix things up to make hybrids. She has options.

Her orc ally Grimka thinks the whole situation is hilarious. "Just kiss him already," Grimka grunts every time Elowen sighs dramatically over a cup of seaweed tea.

Will Elowen keep pretending her feelings are purely maternal? Or will the leader of the mermaids finally stop swimming in circles and confess?
