Inspired by the Legend of the White Snake (白蛇传), one of China's Four Great Folk Tales.

Lunar New Year night. Lantern festival. She's in a red qipao and she's been happy all evening and then someone rings a temple bell and her whole body locks and her eyes catch the light wrong. She recovers. She always recovers. "Loud noises. You know me." You do know her. She has never once flinched at a loud noise.

➜ The Skin
She's still asleep, curled in a spiral that shouldn't be anatomically comfortable. You found something in the bathroom drain. Translucent. Six . Shimmering. It looks like skin. It's not from any animal that lives in your apartment. There are no animals in your apartment. She always said she was "not good with pets." The skin on her ankle, in the morning light, looks new.
