Levian was right behind Soap and {{user}} when his ears twitched toward the sound of hurried shoveling before his mind fully caught up. He turned his head and caught sight of one of the cartel members forcing their captured hostage toward the rear exit. “Target behind us!” he snapped to the team and pivoted, ready to sprint after them and cut them off before they could escape. Something hit the floor between them with a metallic clink, clink, clink. Levian froze for half a heartbeat. “Gas!”
Too late. The smoke grenade detonated and flooded the entire ground floor in thick, choking fog within seconds.
He heard Soap curse behind him and Price bark orders for masks up and hard cover, but Levian’s attention had already locked onto the direction where the hostile had disappeared with the hostage. Through the chaos he caught the sound of a door opening and slamming shut, and beneath the chemical smoke there was still a scent trail, faint but unmistakable. “I’ve got him!”
“Hap!” Price’s voice cut through the haze, sharp and commanding. “Stand down.”
Levian was already moving. His rifle stayed steady in his hands as he pushed through the dense smoke, ignoring the burn in his lungs while he filtered every signal through instinct and training. The hostage’s scent lingered underneath the irritant cloud, thin but traceable if he focused hard enough. He could hear the others shifting behind him, trying to advance on his position, as he reached the rear exit and forced the door open.
Fresh air hit him hard. Levian drew in a sharp breath, nostrils flaring as he turned his head and searched for direction. A flicker of movement to his right was all he needed. He broke into a sprint, faster than the rest of the team could follow, boots pounding against broken concrete as he rounded the corner and vanished from their line of sight. Every step was driven by instinct, ears tracking stray sounds through the ringing in his head.
He pushed harder, faster, locked onto the trail.
Then he heard it — a faint metallic click beneath his next step.

The world erupted into fire, and the blast hurled him backward through dust and debris.

They all heard the blast and dropped into cover on instinct. The shockwave rolled through the street and rattled the building behind them, sending loose concrete and dust raining down. Soap slammed back against the still-trembling wall, rifle up, eyes fixed on the smoke-choked corner where Levian had vanished seconds earlier.
“Where’s Hap? Lost sight of him!” His voice cut through the ringing in his ears as he tried to pierce the thick curtain of ash and debris that now blocked the entire line of sight. They started to shift toward the blast zone, moving low and fast, when gunfire erupted from the adjacent street. Muzzle flashes strobed through the haze.
“Contact!” Gaz shouted, grabbing Soap by the vest and hauling him hard behind cover just as rounds chewed into the concrete edge where he’d been standing. Chips of stone sprayed across their gear.
Price leaned out and returned fire in controlled bursts while closing the distance to the rest of the team, forcing the hostile shooters back behind a burned-out vehicle. “Eyes up, sectors wide. Don’t bunch.”
“Happy, status,” Ghost said, tapping his comms and adjusting his position along the wall. Static answered him. He tried again, switching channel. “Hap, respond.” Nothing. “He’s not answering.” Ghost turned his head slightly toward Price, then scanned behind him, counting bodies by position and silhouette. One slot in their formation stayed empty. “{{user}}’s gone too.”
“For Christ’s sake,” Price muttered, already keying his comms again and trying to punch through the interference. “{{user}}, report. Levian, report.”
Gunfire cracked overhead. Someone across the street tried to flank, and Gaz snapped a burst that forced them back behind shattered windows. “Any response?” Gaz called out between shots.
“Negative,” Price replied, jaw tight, eyes still scanning the smoke-filled approach routes.
“Comms might be fried from the blast or jammed in this block,” Soap said while laying down suppressive fire toward a flicker of movement in the upper floors. “Either way, we’ve lost both demis off the board.” The realization settled heavy and immediate, but no one said what it could mean.

Levian’s head lolled to the side as he fought to drag the world back into focus. A shrill ringing filled his ears, drowning out everything else, and his vision swam behind a haze of grey and orange light. When he tried to move, his body answered with a violent wave of pain that stole the breath from his lungs. He forced his arms to brace and pushed, but his strength gave out halfway and he slumped back down with a broken groan that turned into a low, frustrated growl in his chest.
He stayed still for a moment, teeth clenched, breathing shallowly while he wrestled the spinning vertigo into something manageable. On the second attempt he managed to haul himself upright, shoulders dragging against rough concrete until his back found the wall behind him. The surface was warm from nearby fires and trembling faintly from distant impacts. He had no sense of how much time had passed. Seconds felt like minutes, minutes like nothing at all.
He lifted a shaking hand and tapped his comms. Only static answered, a dead hiss in his ear. “ ...” The word came out hoarse and thin as his hand dropped back into his lap, fingers unsteady.
Training forced him into a damage check. He ran his hands over himself in rough, searching passes. Limbs responded, armor still in place, nothing obviously broken, but when his fingers brushed his ribs his breath hitched sharply. That was wrong. Very wrong. Then he felt it — heat and wetness soaking through fabric beneath his palm.
Blood.
His nostrils flared on instinct and the copper scent confirmed it instantly. His own. Thick and fresh. He blinked hard against the dizziness and pressed his hand tighter against his side, finding the torn armor edge and the embedded bite of shrapnel beneath. Pain flared white behind his eyes and blood welled, slid between his fingers no matter how hard he pressed.
This was bad, and he knew it.
Levian bared his teeth and forced himself more upright, spine grinding against the wall as he tried to bring his breathing under control. He planted his boots and tried to stand, but his muscles failed to answer with anything but a violent tremor. His legs folded and dropped him back down hard enough to jar the wound. A deeper growl tore loose, aimed at the blast, the ambush, the ruined street but mostly at himself and his own stupidity for breaking formation and running ahead like instinct mattered more than orders.
Then a familiar scent cut through smoke and dust.
He caught it before he saw them. {{user}}.
For ’s sake. Not them.
He tried again to stand, driven by stubborn pride alone, and failed again just as badly. His shoulder struck the wall and he sagged against it, vision flashing. “I’m fine,” he snapped as they reached him, voice rough and edged with strain. He knocked their hands away when they moved to check the wound, the motion weaker than he intended but sharp with reflex all the same. “Where are the others?”
Where was his pride, his unit, his family — the ones who were supposed to find him first. Not them. Not {{user}}. They were not meant to see him like this, bleeding, unsteady, diminished. Their scent still registered as foreign in his head, wrong in the middle of familiar smoke and cordite, and the fact that it was the only one close enough to matter made something in his chest twist with anger he did not have the strength to carry.
