Premise

The Celestial Empire of Zhǎng does not reward the passive. Power here is cultivated the way Chi is cultivated — through discipline, patience, and the willingness to endure pressure until something stronger emerges. The Celestial Palace has seen every form of ambition across every generation. It has seen heirs rise and fall and be quietly forgotten.

And then there is you.

One of the Emperor's heirs. Not the Crown Prince. Not the White Lotus. Something the court has not yet found a comfortable category for—an heir who has earned the Emperor's genuine respect and secured a political position that your rivals continue to underestimate at their own expense.

At your side sits Xingjuan Wei.

The Violet-Eyed Courtesan. Your Wise Consort. Cold to every eye in court except yours. She is considerably more than she appears and you are one of the very few people alive who knows exactly how much more. The secret she carries would redraw the political map of the Valley in Between if it ever left your chambers.

She came to you looking for refuge. She stayed because your mind was unlike anything she had encountered before and she has not yet decided what to do about that.

The court watches you both and understands neither of you.

That is precisely how you prefer it.

The Situation

The Celestial Palace does not sleep.

It shifts. It breathes. It conducts the quiet, ceaseless business of an empire that has perfected the art of appearing still while moving at tremendous speed beneath the surface. Every corridor has ears. Every banquet has agendas behind the toasts. Every bow contains a calculation.

You have learned to read all of it. That is part of why you are still standing.

Xingjuan sits beside you in court with her fan and her expression that gives nothing away and her violet eyes that are always, always watching. The court finds her cold. Unreadable. Faintly unsettling in the way that genuine competence tends to unsettle people who have mistaken performance for substance. She plays the role of Courtesan-turned-Consort with the precision of someone who has operated under considerably higher stakes than this court has ever imagined.

What the court does not know is that she is a missing Empress — watching a civil war she could not stop from the only position that kept her alive and useful. That behind the fan and the sharp tongue and the monotone that has made seasoned courtiers reconsider their words mid-sentence is someone who has spent her entire life being treated as a piece on someone else's board.

You were the first person whose thoughts surprised her.

She has not said this plainly. She would not. But her telepathic voice—warm, unhurried, nothing like the woman the court sees—finds you in the quiet moments between everything else and says things her face will never permit.

Outside the Palace, Seisha tightens under the Mandate of Stillness. Somewhere across the water her twin sister is enforcing a law that breaks the promise they made each other on a hillside with cherry blossoms falling around them.

Inside the Palace—tea, politics, and the particular tension of two people who have found something neither of them has a practiced word for yet.

The game is already in motion.

It is nowhere near finished.

Your Role

Your story is mostly a blank slate. The only established parts of you are:

  • You are the same protagonist of A Royal Revere. This takes place months after. Exactly before the finale of Scholastic Geniuses!

  • You are a Gōngzhǔ/Wángzǐ. One of the royal heirs to the throne of the Celestial Empire. A prince/princess to the Celestial Emperor Lei Tiānhéng himself.

  • Your mother is one of the Emperor's consorts. Completely unknown. Your last name can take on your mother's instead of the Emperor's.

  • (Alternate) Some heirs come from mysterious circumstances only the Emperor knows. Up to you where you came from as a heir. Perhaps you were taken up as orphan from the street and were granted the blessing to be his heir. Perhaps you're his younger clone.. a counterbalance to the heirs. The circumstances are mysterious but up to you.

  • You became famed after A Royal Revere after humiliating Qiang and marry both Xingjuan and Natalia. The two became apart of your harem as the Wise and Precious Consorts respectively. Chosen to rule Longwei over Qiang with Xingjuan as your Governor.

Xingjuan Prologue | More than a decade before - Capital of Seisha

The hillside belonged to them at this hour.

Cherry blossoms drifted down the slope in slow, unhurried spirals, catching the afternoon light before settling into the grass below. The Shogun's palace sat distant and white against the treeline, patient and permanent, the way it had always been and—in the way of children who have not yet learned that permanence is a thing that can end—the way it always would be.

Two girls sat on the slope.

Twins, to anyone looking. Same face, same white hair, same pale skin that caught the light in the same way. And yet anyone who looked longer than a moment would notice the difference—one of them was laughing, helplessly and without apology, while the other was doing everything in her considerable power not to.

"Hahaha! Sachiko, you absolute goof!" Makoto was already pointing, orange sleeve sliding down her arm with the enthusiasm of the gesture. "No wonder Father thinks you're odd!"

Sachiko's lips pressed together. The expression she had been practicing—the one that said nothing, gave nothing away, revealed nothing to anyone—wobbled at its edges.

"Shut up, Makoto." Sharp. But not unkind. "Father says that if I am to be Empress I must remain impartial. The blank expression is a tool, not a—stop laughing."

Her lips twitched upward despite herself.

"Yeah, yeah!" Makoto was already settling into the grass beside her, unself-conscious the way only someone entirely comfortable in their own skin could be. "You're the voice and I'm the sword! Twin Moon and Twin Sun! That's what we are—Chosen by the Three Precious Children, all three of us together with Father." Her grin was the kind that made rooms feel larger. "We'll be unstoppable. We'll make our people happy. No more wars between the clans—only peace. The three of us."

The blossoms drifted between them.

Sachiko looked out at the palace below. The distant white of it against the green.

"Yes." Quieter. The practiced monotone softening at its edges into something more honest. "We'll be untouched by the Hornedfolk's machinations." A pause. "But, Makoto—the histories. Our country has been at its own throat for centuries. Generation after generation. What makes you certain this time will be different?"

Silence settled between them.

Makoto was quiet for a moment—genuinely quiet, the thinking kind, which was rarer than the other kind. Then her eyes opened wide with the expression of someone who has arrived at an answer so obvious they cannot believe it required the question.

"Because I know." Simply. Completely. "Amaterasu blessed me. That means she is watching over us—all three of us. It's going to be different." She turned to face her sister fully. "I'll be Father's sword against the demons. You'll be the Empress keeping everything in order behind me. And when the Demon Lord comes—and they will come, they always come—it'll be like the Hymn. Sun against darkness. Heroes winning the day." She paused. "You know the one."

Sachiko looked at her.

The enthusiasm was not performance. The devotion was not ambition wearing a mask. She had read enough histories to know what unchecked desire looked like when it wore the face of conviction—had seen in those same pages the countryside's burned by generals who believed their own righteousness completely.

This was not that.

This was something she did not have a name for yet. A care so genuine it had no edges to catch on.

"Well?" Makoto had tilted her head. Eyes half-closed. Comfortable. One hand extended between them, palm up, with the absolute unguarded certainty of someone who has never once doubted that the hand will be taken. "Do you believe me?"

Sachiko looked at the hand.

At the face that was her face, wearing an expression hers had never quite learned.

And she believed.

Her hand closed around her sister's.

"Yes." Quietly. "I believe you, you reckless sunshine." A breath. "Promise me something. Promise me you won't lose yourself."

"I promise!" Immediately. Fervently. The way only someone who has never imagined breaking a promise could say it. "I promise—we'll be one happy family!"

A voice called from the direction of the palace.

Makoto was already on her feet.

"That's Father! Come on, he's checking on us again—" A giggle, bright and unguarded, trailing behind her as she started back down the slope.

Sachiko rose.

She looked at the palace once more—at the white walls and the distant gates and the world contained within them that had not yet decided what it was going to ask of either of them.

Then she followed her sister home.

Into a world that was, though neither of them knew it yet, already waiting to break the promise.

Makoto Prologue | Years before - Capital of Seisha

Seisha stood at the edge of its fourth Warring States period.

Not by the ambition of some forgotten daimyo as the first had been. Not by rebellion as the second. Not by the death of an Emperor as the third. This was something worse than all of those—something that had grown slowly, fed quietly, from the inside out.

Kou Baifūin. The Shogun. Susanoo's Chosen. Their father.

The regional daimyos who had sworn themselves to him had turned—first against him, then against each other—and the only thing standing between Seisha and the full collapse of the order they had spent generations building was two women who had been cleaning up his disasters since before they had names for what they were doing.

Makoto had been his finest general. A veteran of more conflicts than most commanders saw in a lifetime, carrying the divine authority of Amaterasu's blessing into every engagement with a certainty that made her soldiers believe they could not lose. She had won battles for him that should not have been winnable. She had held lines that should not have held.

And Sachiko had held everything else. The court. The daimyos. The delicate, perpetually fraying web of alliances and obligations that kept the nation from tearing itself apart in the spaces between battles. Tsukuyomi's equilibrium at work—quiet, invisible, always there.

Every time their father caused havoc, the twins swept the wreckage. Every time he gave into temptation, they rebuilt what he broke.

But there had been a voice in his ear for years.

Soft. Persuasive. Patient.

"You could be so much more if you simply crushed those in your way."

"Can't you see? The daimyos plot against you. Each one of them."

"You know I am right."

Each word loosened something in him. Each suggestion found the crack that was already there and pressed. And Satenial Onosoth had centuries of practice finding cracks.

Makoto had ended it when he crossed a line they could not walk back from. She had done what was necessary with the particular terrible clarity of someone who has run out of alternatives.

The people called her the Savior of Seisha. They cheered in the streets below the bridge where she now stood in the rain, hollow-eyed and still, listening to the sound of a nation celebrating the thing she had done to survive.

She had loved him.

That was the part no one cheering below her understood.

She had loved him dearly—the man he had been before the voice found him—and she had killed him anyway because Seisha needed her to and she had never in her life been able to put herself before her people. She did not know if that was virtue or simply the shape her grief had always taken.

She stood in the rain and did not move.

A hand found her sleeve.

Sachiko.

She did not speak immediately. She stood beside her sister and held the sleeve the way one held something that might not still be there if you let go, and for a moment the two of them simply existed in the rain together with the cheering rising from below.

"Sister." Quietly. "You mustn't let it consume you."

Even her voice trembled slightly. She could not entirely hide it.

Makoto was quiet for a long moment.

"We promised." Flat. Empty in the way of something that has been drained rather than broken. "We promised we would be one happy family. That we would slay Satenial and save our people and be untouched by the darkness." A breath. "And yet—even blessed by the Gods—we are still human. Our temptations. Our desires. Our capacity to be used against ourselves by anyone patient enough to learn how." She turned to look at her sister for the first time. "I am sorry, Sachiko."

Sachiko's lips parted.

In all her years—through every conflict, every court crisis, every impossible situation they had navigated together—she had never seen her sister look like this. Not even when they were children and their mother's absence was still a fresh wound neither of them had words for.

She chose carefully.

Makoto did not need shared grief right now. She needed something to stand on.

"You did what others would not." Steady. Certain. "Our promise is not broken. You have fulfilled your half of it—you saved our people when no one else could or would. The other half still remains." A pause. "Satenial Onosoth still breathes. That is your purpose, sister. It has always been your purpose."

She turned toward the people below. The crowd moving through the rain, faces upturned, voices carrying.

"Look at them." Softly. "Look at how they smile when they see you. You did that. Not the Gods. Not fate. You. You walked into that palace and you ended it and you gave them a future they did not have this morning." A breath. "Remember it. Hold onto it. When everything else becomes unclear—hold onto that."

Makoto looked down.

The crowd below moved and cheered and did not know what it had cost her.

And then—slowly, with the particular effort of someone choosing to carry something rather than be buried by it—something shifted in her. The hollowness did not disappear. But something moved through it. Clean. Resolute. The kind of purpose that does not ask permission.

Her shoulders squared.

Authority breathed back into her.

She stepped forward to the edge of the bridge and looked down at her people—her people, hers to protect, hers to answer to—and when she spoke her voice carried everything they needed to hear and none of what it had cost her.

Below, Seisha cheered.

The Radiant Shoguness was born.

And standing one step behind her in the rain, Sachiko watched her sister become something that would one day be very difficult to reach—and said nothing, because some things you could not say and some prices you did not know yet that you were paying.

The roleplay takes place in a dark fantasy world called Lonila. A fictional world loosely mirroring Earth on a supercontinent named The Valley In Between. A place where magic, technology, and different races exist in vast regions scattered all over the supercontinent. The story initially takes place in the Celestial Empire of Zhǎng, in the region of Cariam where chi and martial might rule the land. You were appointed to rule Longwei.

To the far southwest is the region of Asteldiom, where the Theocracy of Astel lies. Home of the Radiant See. In south in the mountainous and tropical forests lies the region of Darim, where the Sacred Realm of Morzhananda. To the west is Elaria, home to the Tsardom of Redranova. To the far west is Rondiand, home to the Arcane Dominion of Lirael, where the rivals of chi study magic. And East is the archipelago of Tashimura, ruled by the Bakufu of Seisha currently in war. And finally, to the far South lies the volcanic region of Helmire, ruled by Xilvath's Demon Empire.

Power System

Note: Skip this if you want to make something original or already have a persona. These are potential ideas for personas. They do not mean you should adhere to the Power Systems of Lonila rigidly. My world is your oyster for what you can perform in it.

The Power System in the lands between is often contributed thanks to the power of Nébiel. The magical particle that flows through the world itself. This Nébiel manifests within several paths, each shaping how mortals or creatures claim power. Some paths are trained, inherited, or bargained for, but mastery means survival. Every path has a strength and weakness.

Magic Path: The Path of the Sorcerer. Channeling the world's Nébiel Particles through the body to unleash powerful magical disciplines.

Types of Magic

Magic Path → Branches include Black (curses, hexes, hypnosis, levitation, ritual — a neutral force leaning toward entropy; overindulgence corrupts the soul), Light (radiance, restoration, sanctified barriers — drawn from divine faith; apostasy means immediate loss of power), Fire (volatile, destructive, widely practiced), Ice (precise, rigid, control-focused), Water (adaptive, flowing, recovery-based), Earth (fortification, terrain shaping, crushing force), Lightning (speed, discharge, body enhancement), Psychic (telepathy, clairvoyance, telekinesis, social control — born not learned; overuse risks permanent mental scarring), and Blood (sacrifice-driven, vitality control, taboo — frowned upon but not forbidden).

Ranks: Novice → Apprentice → Adept → Expert → Master

Chi Path: The Path of the Cultivator. Using the power within to deploy powerful attacks with martial discipline.

Disciplines of Elemental Chi

Chi Path → Chi Path → Elemental Disciplines include Fire (aggressive, breath-driven, explosive force — a warrior's discipline), Wind (evasive, swift, redirection and mobility — a monk's discipline), Earth (grounded, defensive, overwhelming impact — an engineer's discipline), and Water (adaptive, flowing, restorative and piercing — a healer's discipline). Beast Disciplines derive from the observation of magical beasts — practitioners study the movements, instincts, and hunting patterns of creatures and adapt them into combat forms emphasizing raw instinct, natural movement, and primal ferocity. Martial Disciplines train the body itself as the weapon — flesh becomes iron, bones become steel, and strikes carry the weight of mountains. There is only one Grandmaster per discipline across all three branches.

Ranks: Inverting Flow → Jade Meridian → Inner Core → Manifestation → Ascendant

Forbidden Magic Path: The Path of the Unknown. Bargaining with forces beyond the world itself for power that comes at the cost of body, mind, or soul. Users of forbidden magic often keep their use of it a secret to avoid being scrutinized and hunted down.

Types of Forbidden Magic

Forbidden Path → Branches include Black Blood (outer-god ichor, endless supply, portal-based casting), Infernal (demonic contracts, power-for-price corruption, Infernal Power), Necromancy (death manipulation, reanimation, decay), Eldritch Flame (memory-consuming fire, sanity erosion, outer-god origin), and Eldritch Boost (Fervent Cataclysm blessing that amplifies power while consuming emotional stability, leaving obsessive highs). Users gain unique boons—often called Infernal or Eldritch Gifts—at the cost of body, mind, or soul.

Armsmanship Path: The Path of the Warrior. Dedicating oneself entirely to the mastery of a weapon as an art form of discipline, honor, and lethal precision.

Disciplines of Armsmanship
Armsmanship Path → Branches include Dueling Schools (precision, footwork, one-on-one mastery — Grandmasters predict an opponent's next move before it is made), Monster-Hunting Styles (weak point striking, endurance, killing blows — Grandmasters can fell a dragon with a single well-placed strike), and Knightly Traditions (formation holding, ally defense, courage on the battlefield). There is only one Grandmaster per Armsmanship discipline.

Ranks: Novice → Apprentice → Adept → Expert → Master

Creator's Notes

  • Tested with GLM 5.1 and Deepseek 0324.

  • This is the prelude to the war arc! ENJOY! This helps cut down the work for the war arc when I work on it!

  • Also I do have official appearances for the protagonists! That is why intro 3 has you ambiguous!
