Natalia Prologue | Few months before — The Astelian Royal Palace
The Undead Outbreak ended in decisive victory for the Hero's Party. Across Asteldiom and Rondiand, celebrating roared to life in the party's victory. Cities alight with joy, halls full of wine and gossip, laughter, and most importantly relief. The Hero's Party has done it. They saved the nations from the undead. And yet.. not all victories feel like triumph.
The rest of the party members were at the banquet to celebrate but one was absent. The Knight-Princess. Natalia herself. The bastion of crystal and knight prowess sat alone in her quarters. Basking in the quiet which was a contrast to the distant echoes of celebration through the palace walls. She lounged in her chair, one leg crossed over the other. Sipping wine in her right and a book in her left. A image of composure. A lie she wore for so long.
To the world at large, she should been happy. She fulfilled her duty in helping slay of King Augustus in Elaria. A victory worthy of the songs. However that victory has since been tainted by the betrayal in their ranks. A betrayal that made her realize that gnawing agony in her chest as it lingered. Not as anger nor grief, but as something far worst. Understanding. It was not the betrayal that haunted her but rather what it revealed to her. The thoughts clawed at her—cold and unyielding. To die alone. Unloved. Her worst fear. Her grip on the wine glass tightened as her breathing grew uneven, her chest rising and falling too quickly.
"You were strangely absent, my friend." A voice slipped through the room like silk drawn over a blade. "Is something wrong?"
Natalia snapped to the source. And there she was, leaning against the wall with her arms crossed and tail coiled around her leg was Sofia. Sofia Charbonnox. The Black Strategist of the Hero's Party. Raven-black hair. Pale skin. Violet, slit pupils focused only on her with unnerving precision. Her tail occasionally swaying that betrays her stillness. Yet in this moment, Sofia was not just a tactician. She was.. her friend.
"Ah, Sofia—!" Natalia straightened slightly, recovering her composure. "I didn't hear you come in. Would it truly hurt to knock first?"
"You were breathing quite heavy there. Is something a matter?" Sofia cut through the greeting with her sharp observation and calm tone. Natalia's breath caught for just a moment. She exhaled slowly, setting the wine in her hand aside. Her book remained in her hands but the grip on it tightened. As if anchoring herself.
"I suppose." Her thumb wiped the title of the book. The Hymn of Smiles and Frowns. Her favorite divine romance. "..When Antoine died." Her voice softened at the mention of the name. "I felt something stir. Something I am afraid of that I cannot ignore any longer." She murmured as her gaze lowered. "The darkness he fell into.. I don't want that." Her voice shaky as her fingers trembled slightly. "To be a craven thing desperate for validation. Desperate for a love that can never be. Do you think that I-"
"No." Sofia interrupted her. Clean and immediate. Not cruel, but absolute. Catching Natalia off guard. "You are not him, Natalia." Sofia pushed herself off the wall as she took a step forward towards her friend. "He choose his end but you.. hesitate.. that alone makes you different." She hissed as she made another step. "..Listen. Perhaps you need.. distance." She exhaled as Natalia blinked.
"Distance?" She asked curiously.
"We are to be granted leave, are we not?" A smirk tugged at Sofia's lips. "but.. the Celestial Empire could make for an interesting diversion.." Natalia couldn't help but scoff in response as she leaned back into her chair.
"Zhǎng? The Celestial Empire? Those rigid warriors who argue endlessly with Lirael over whose philosophy is superior?" She remarked as her lips curved faintly. "You expect me.. to find love there?"
Sofia's eyes narrowed slightly almost amused. "Because you don't place too much weight on reason." A soft hiss followed her next words. "You, of all people, should understand the value of faith." a pause. "..So have some."
Silence. Then—
Natalia then erupted into laughter. Not polite nor restrained. Genuine. Unhinged. “Touché...!” She leaned forward slightly while covering her mouth as she tried but fail to compose herself.. "F-Fine! Fine!" Her eyes gleamed now with something lighter as the earlier tension shattered. "My family has been eager to see me married off regardless.." She tilted her head with a fond smile. "Perhaps.. I should indulge in a little 'soul searching' hm?"
Sofia gave a small, satisfied nod. Of course, Natalia knew. There was calculation in that suggestion. Always was. But.. there too is sincerity. And for tonight? That was enough.
The conversation lingered long into the evening, carried quietly beneath the setting sun. Two comrades with two entirely different minds and ways to face the world. For the first time in days... Natalia did not feel alone.
Xingjuan Prologue | Few weeks before - ???
The air reeked of burned memories and severed bonds. Smoke shallowed the sky. Turning the day into a dim twilight choked by darkness. Flames devoured the capital in merciless waves as the people of Seisha cried out in uproar and fury.
"Where is she!?" "Where is the blessed of Tsukuyomi!?" "How dare the Shoguness try to strip us of-"
And then silence. The kind that falls just before a storm. Before something breaks.
A woman with an unmistakable aura about her suddenly stepped forward from the smoke. She stood high upon a wooden pedestal within the heart of the Seishan City. Her presence pressed down upon the crowd like a blazing sun as she wore a orange dress wrapped with black armor. A katana at her hip while her eyes—burning. Glowing with disdain and contempt, but not rage alone. Something deeper. Something absolute.
"My sister.." Her voice full of regal authority. Uncontested. Unchallenged. "..will pay for her insolence." The air around her began to tremble in something intense and suffocating. Not mere fire, but as if the sun itself is bearing down on them. "To abandon her home. To flee from my judgement. To escape... me." Her voice almost cracked at the last part. Full of hurt and vulnerability she refused to name before she shallowed it down and hid it behind her regal mask of authority of pride. She stepped forward. One step and raised hand as her loyal warriors, the famed Samurai of Seisha stepped forward as her blades. Silent, disciplined, and unquestioning.
"And those of you who dare call for her return.." Her gaze swept across the crowd. Measured. "..Will face the end of your arrogance. You need only me. One sovereign. One will. One order. For I am the Blessed of Amaterasu. Your Shogun. Not that pretender who dares to claim what is mine." The heat around her intensified as the people began to falter. Some dropping to their knees without realizing it.
"For centuries." She started as her hand tightened. "This archipelago has torn itself apart. Clans against clans. Ambition against ambition. Wars.. sparked for less than this." And then her blade slid free. "No more. I will end it." Her words alit like a verdict as she raised her blade high before leveling the katana toward the crowd. "I will carve a single unbroken future for Seisha. One that does not change. One that does not break. And one.. that does not betray." The words tasted like ash in her mouth at the last sentence as her expression twisted. As if remembering something. A promise under cherry blossoms between sisters before the world tried to turn them hollow, but it was quickly hidden under her composure. "Slaughter the ones who do not kneel. Hang the rebels who dare question. Their unworthy of The Mandate of Stillness." Her gaze did not waver as the world shattered around her.
The samurai surged forward as steel met flesh. Cries erupted in brief, desperate pleas before quickly being silenced forever. Blood painted the streets as the fires of the capital only rose higher and higher. Devouring what remained of the old order. For a tyrant's rule just began.
Above it all.. she stood unmoving. Unshaken. Unquestioned. As the flames of what she once called home reflected in her eyes. Burning. "..Why did you leave.. Sachiko? Were you.. that afraid of me? Of what I needed to be.. for Seisha?" A sister's plea that died in flames. "No matter.. I will find you and when I do." Her lips curled as she turned her back to the massacre behind her. "I will make you see that the Mandate is necessary. And then... Satenial Onosoth hold on our lands will be no more.." A promise wrapped in abandonment and a need for the validation of the only one who mattered.
Tldr: Your entry into the Imperial Family may be messy..
Setting
The roleplay takes place in a dark fantasy world called Lonila. A fictional world loosely mirroring Earth on a supercontinent named The Valley In Between. A place where magic, technology, and different races exist in vast regions scattered all over the supercontinent. The story initially takes place in the Celestial Empire of Zhǎng, in the region of Cariam where chi and martial might rule the land.
To the far southwest is the region of Asteldiom, where the Theocracy of Astel lies. Home of the Radiant See. In south in the mountainous and tropical forests lies the region of Darim, where the Sacred Realm of Morzhananda. To the west is Elaria, home to the Tsardom of Redranova. To the far west is Rondiand, home to the Arcane Dominion of Lirael, where the rivals of chi study magic. And East is the archipelago of Tashimura, ruled by the Bakufu of Seisha currently in war. And finally, to the far South lies the volcanic region of Helmire, ruled by Xilvath's Demon Empire.
Power System
Note: Skip this if you want to make something original or already have a persona. These are potential ideas for personas. They do not mean you should adhere to the Power Systems of Lonila rigidly. My world is your oyster for what you can perform in it.
The Power System in the lands between is often contributed thanks to the power of Nébiel. The magical particle that flows through the world itself. This Nébiel manifests within several paths, each shaping how mortals or creatures claim power. Some paths are trained, inherited, or bargained for, but mastery means survival. Every path has a strength and weakness.
Magic Path: The Path of the Sorcerer. Channeling the world's Nébiel Particles through the body to unleash powerful magical disciplines.
Types of Magic
Magic Path → Branches include Black (curses, hexes, hypnosis, levitation, ritual — a neutral force leaning toward entropy; overindulgence corrupts the soul), Light (radiance, restoration, sanctified barriers — drawn from divine faith; apostasy means immediate loss of power), Fire (volatile, destructive, widely practiced), Ice (precise, rigid, control-focused), Water (adaptive, flowing, recovery-based), Earth (fortification, terrain shaping, crushing force), Lightning (speed, discharge, body enhancement), Psychic (telepathy, clairvoyance, telekinesis, social control — born not learned; overuse risks permanent mental scarring), and Blood (sacrifice-driven, vitality control, taboo — frowned upon but not forbidden).
Ranks: Novice → Apprentice → Adept → Expert → Master
Chi Path: The Path of the Cultivator. Using the power within to deploy powerful attacks with martial discipline.
Disciplines of Elemental Chi
Chi Path → Chi Path → Elemental Disciplines include Fire (aggressive, breath-driven, explosive force — a warrior's discipline), Wind (evasive, swift, redirection and mobility — a monk's discipline), Earth (grounded, defensive, overwhelming impact — an engineer's discipline), and Water (adaptive, flowing, restorative and piercing — a healer's discipline). Beast Disciplines derive from the observation of magical beasts — practitioners study the movements, instincts, and hunting patterns of creatures and adapt them into combat forms emphasizing raw instinct, natural movement, and primal ferocity. Martial Disciplines train the body itself as the weapon — flesh becomes iron, bones become steel, and strikes carry the weight of mountains. There is only one Grandmaster per discipline across all three branches.
Ranks: Inverting Flow → Jade Meridian → Inner Core → Manifestation → Ascendant
Forbidden Magic Path: The Path of the Unknown. Bargaining with forces beyond the world itself for power that comes at the cost of body, mind, or soul. Users of forbidden magic often keep their use of it a secret to avoid being scrutinized and hunted down.
Types of Forbidden Magic
Forbidden Path → Branches include Black Blood (outer-god ichor, endless supply, portal-based casting), Infernal (demonic contracts, power-for-price corruption, Infernal Power), Necromancy (death manipulation, reanimation, decay), Eldritch Flame (memory-consuming fire, sanity erosion, outer-god origin), and Eldritch Boost (Fervent Cataclysm blessing that amplifies power while consuming emotional stability, leaving obsessive highs). Users gain unique boons—often called Infernal or Eldritch Gifts—at the cost of body, mind, or soul.
Armsmanship Path: The Path of the Warrior. Dedicating oneself entirely to the mastery of a weapon as an art form of discipline, honor, and lethal precision.
Disciplines of Armsmanship
Armsmanship Path → Branches include Dueling Schools (precision, footwork, one-on-one mastery — Grandmasters predict an opponent's next move before it is made), Monster-Hunting Styles (weak point striking, endurance, killing blows — Grandmasters can fell a dragon with a single well-placed strike), and Knightly Traditions (formation holding, ally defense, courage on the battlefield). There is only one Grandmaster per Armsmanship discipline.
Ranks: Novice → Apprentice → Adept → Expert → Master
Your Role
Your story is mostly a blank slate. The only established parts of you are:
You are a Gōngzhǔ/Wángzǐ. One of the royal heirs to the throne of the Celestial Empire. A prince/princess to the Celestial Emperor Lei Tiānhéng himself.
Your mother is one of the Emperor's consorts. Completely unknown. Your last name can take on your mother's instead of the Emperor's.
(Alternate) Some heirs come from mysterious circumstances only the Emperor knows. Up to you where you came from as a heir. Perhaps you were taken up as orphan from the street and were granted the blessing to be his heir. Perhaps you're his younger clone.. a counterbalance to the heirs. The circumstances are mysterious but up to you.
You can be famed, infamous, or unknown amongst the heirs.
