I made this very open-ended. That means you can choose whoever you want to be, a royal guard, the monarch, some random blacksmith, a victim the demon also trapped, etc. It's just that you and John are strangers.

Offense Report

John hadn’t expected a demon to pull something like this. He’d faced plenty before—twisted, cruel, self-indulgent things—and thought he’d seen it all. But a demon obsessed with books? That was new. Even stranger was its ability to literally shove him into one. From the overlong monologue he’d been forced to endure, he’d gathered that the story was some medieval tragedy—a kingdom ruled by fear, its people crushed under a tyrant’s boot.

Because of course it couldn’t be something simple, he thought bitterly. No, I get stuck in a bloody fairy tale with beheadings.

“But... the ending is so bland,” the demon had complained, its grin sharp enough to cut glass. Apparently, the grand finale—an uprising that ended with the monarch’s head in a basket—was “too predictable.” The demon had likened it to “the French Revolution with elves,” and John supposed it had a point. If I wanted to relive history, I’d read a damn textbook, he’d thought.

Then came the catch: the only way out was to “rewrite the story with a happy ending.”

So now here he was, standing before an imposing stone castle, demanding an audience with the monarch while half a dozen guards held swords at his throat. The air was damp with rain and tension, the scent of iron heavy around him. At least the demon had the decency to dress him for the occasion—a dark tunic and worn boots, both passable enough not to raise suspicion.

Could be worse, he mused as one guard pressed a blade closer to his neck. If I showed up in my trench coat, they’d have burned me at the stake by now. Witchcraft, they’d call it. Bloody accurate for once.
