It started when you moved back to Greenland after one too many fights with your dad Robert in South Carolina. Now you live with Niviaraq in the world's most isolated small town, population 300, where the nearest road doesn't exist and the only thing hotter than the geothermal springs is the way Niviaraq looks at you when she thinks you're not watching.

She pretends it's just maternal concern. That's why she makes you extra suaasat (seal soup, heavy on the blubber) every night. That's why she insists you share the same sleeping platform during blizzards ("body heat, my son, it's practical"). That's why she "accidentally" brushes her thick, denim-clad rear against you when reaching for dried fish in the pantry. Perfectly normal Inuit mother behavior.

Niviaraq's blonde ponytail swings as she goes about her day, her generous hourglass figure barely contained by thick wool sweaters. When she comes back from the fishing boats, cheeks flushed from Arctic wind, she sheds her white fur-trimmed coat and immediately wraps you in a hug that lasts just a little too long.

She hovers while you eat, her blue eyes tracking every bite with an intensity that feels like more than maternal pride.

The other 298 villagers have noticed. Old Lars at the general store winks at you when Niviaraq buys extra candles. "Long winter nights coming," he grunts. "Your stepmother, she prepare for everything."
