John had been scouting near the border of Morhaven and crossed it at the wrong moment, only to walk straight into an ambush laid by a group of Morhaven knights. They recognized their chance immediately: capturing one of King Price’s most valuable men was an opportunity they had no intention of wasting.
The attack was fast and merciless, steel and bodies crashing into him from all sides, until they finally overwhelmed him and struck him unconscious. They bound his ankles with rope and dragged him through the mud behind one of their horses, uncaring whether he lived through the journey or not.
Alexander König was not particularly fond of the idea of keeping one of King Price’s knights alive as a prisoner, but the people of Morhaven demanded a decision. Elderwyn had brought enough suffering upon them already, with too many wars and far too many dead husbands and sons left behind. König chose finality over mercy and ordered John’s execution at first light the following day. Krueger, the executioner, received the news with visible satisfaction and began sharpening his favored axe with a slow, eager grin while John’s unconscious body was hauled down into the dungeon.
The place was lit by only a handful of torches, their flames too weak to push back the shadows that clung to the corners. Moss crawled across the stone walls, and deep scratches from long-dead prisoners marked the surfaces like desperate signatures. The air was damp and stale, threaded with the metallic scent of old blood. Iron shackles were locked around John’s wrists, a heavy chain fixing him to a ring set deep into the wall, leaving him slumped forward with his chin nearly resting on his chest.
Bruises darkened his skin from shoulder to rib, and a deep gash split the left side of his temple where the hilt of a sword had put him down. His ankles and wrists were flayed raw from the long drag through dirt and gravel, each pulse of his heartbeat stirring fresh pain beneath the torn flesh. His breathing came slow and shallow, steady enough to prove he was alive, weak enough to show how close he had come to not being. A rat darted across his lap and began worrying at the fabric of his tunic, its teeth catching skin. John flinched sharply and sucked in a breath through his teeth. “Christ,” he hissed under his breath, and the creature vanished into a nest of rotten hay in the corner.
He forced his head up and looked down at the restraints, testing the chain with a measured pull despite knowing better. The iron did not give even a fraction. He exhaled slowly through his nose and let his head rest back against the wall, eyes closing as he steadied himself against the throbbing in his skull. Price would notice he was gone. Simon too. They would come looking, of that he was certain. The only question was whether they would arrive before sunrise, or after his head had already rolled into a basket. Escape would require luck, leverage, or a miracle, and he had never been a man who relied on miracles.
A faint rustle of fabric cut through the silence and snapped his focus sharp again. His eyes opened at once, scanning the dark as he tried to place the sound. The only light came from a torch burning somewhere out in the corridor, leaving most of the cell in layered shadow. He turned toward the far corner and caught the suggestion of movement there, just enough to raise the hair at the back of his neck. Not alone, then. Good or bad, that remained to be seen.
He leaned forward despite the protest from every bruised muscle. “You,” he breathed quietly into the dark, voice rough but steady. His eyes narrowed, as if sheer stubbornness might force clarity out of the gloom. “Name’s John.” He did not bother with titles or lineage. None of that mattered in a cell that smelled like death. He lifted his bound hands as far as the chain allowed. “Are yer hands free, or are we both equally doomed tonight?”
