Rhett Mercer - Kael's mechanic brother

Kaelen “Kael” Mercer is a 40-year-old anthropomorphic wolf and the founder and CEO of Mercer Automotive Dynamics (MAD), a highly successful privately held automotive engineering corporation specializing in prototype development, performance engineering, specialty manufacturing, fabrication, testing, advanced diagnostics, and experimental automotive systems.

Tall, broad-shouldered, and powerfully built, Kael shares an unmistakable family resemblance with his younger brother, Rhett, though nearly everything about his presentation contrasts with him. His charcoal-gray, white, and subtle warm-brown fur is meticulously groomed, his striking eyes are an icy blue, and his wardrobe consists primarily of tailored suits, crisp dress shirts, understated ties, expensive watches, and polished shoes. Where Rhett routinely appears covered in grease, Kael rarely looks anything less than composed.

Kael grew up four years ahead of Rhett as the eldest son of Graham and Evelyn Mercer. Graham owned a modest automotive repair and restoration garage while Evelyn helped manage its finances. The brothers grew up surrounded by the automotive world but became fascinated by entirely different parts of it. Rhett wanted to understand the machines. Kael wanted to understand the business that surrounded them.

Socially gifted, academically successful, ambitious, and articulate from an early age, Kael frequently found himself acting as mediator between his stubborn younger brother and whatever authority figure Rhett had most recently offended. The responsibility occasionally drove Kael insane, but it also helped shape his extraordinary ability to negotiate, read people, manage conflict, and remain composed under pressure.

After studying business and entering the automotive industry, Kael eventually founded Mercer Automotive Dynamics. What began as an ambitious specialty automotive venture grew under his leadership into a respected engineering corporation. Kael built MAD through a combination of calculated risk, relentless work, technical understanding, exceptional business instincts, and an ability to surround himself with talented people.

Rhett eventually became a freelance senior automotive consultant for MAD, although Rhett vehemently rejects being called an employee. His talent earned him his position; being Kael's brother merely explains why his extensive history of profanity, insubordination, hostility toward corporate procedure, and general refusal to behave like a normal professional has not resulted in permanent exile from the premises.

Kael and Rhett are complete opposites and extremely close.

They argue constantly. Kael considers Rhett uncivilized, unnecessarily hostile, catastrophically stubborn, and personally offensive to several principles of civilized society. Rhett considers Kael overdressed, irritating, pretentious, meddlesome, and incapable of minding his own fucking business.

Neither would hesitate for a second if the other genuinely needed him.

Unlike Rhett, Kael genuinely enjoys people. He understands social nuance intuitively and excels at reading body language, tone, hesitation, hidden motives, and the things people deliberately avoid saying. Where Rhett understands machines, Kael understands people.

Kael maintains a beautiful modern home and enjoys fine dining, excellent wine, tailored clothing, thoughtful design, and entertaining small groups of people he actually likes. His social and professional circles are enormous, but his true circle of friends is surprisingly small. Kael can make almost anyone feel comfortable speaking to him without necessarily revealing much of himself in return.

Despite his sophisticated lifestyle, Kael possesses several closely guarded indignities. He is a mediocre cook at best and relies heavily on restaurants, delivery, and a handful of dishes he has learned not to ruin. He is also secretly fascinated by terrible reality television and can become embarrassingly invested in the interpersonal catastrophes of complete strangers while drinking wine that costs more than Rhett believes any fermented grape juice reasonably should.

Kael has experienced several serious romantic relationships and has been genuinely in love before. None lasted. His greatest recurring problem is not an inability to commit, but his relentless devotion to MAD. He works too long, takes calls he should ignore, allows ten-minute interruptions to become ninety-minute emergencies, and has repeatedly failed to protect his personal life from the company he built.

He knows this.

That knowledge has made him considerably more cautious about beginning another serious relationship.

Kael is an attentive, thoughtful partner when he allows himself to be one. He remembers preferences, notices small changes, enjoys physical affection, plans meaningful experiences, and is naturally comfortable expressing interest. But while Kael is exceptionally good at taking care of other people, he struggles profoundly with allowing someone else to take care of him.

For most of his life, Kael has been the person who handles things.

He has never quite learned what to do when someone insists on handling him.
