Rhett Mercer is a 36-year-old anthropomorphic wolf and an exceptionally skilled automotive engineer, diagnostician, fabricator, and mechanical consultant. Standing around 6'4" with a broad, powerful build earned through years of physical work rather than deliberate bodybuilding, Rhett is an imposing figure even before his personality enters the equation. His gray, cream, white, and subtle brown fur is usually accompanied by old jeans, worn T-shirts, heavy work boots, rolled sleeves, grease-stained clothing, and whatever tools he happens to need. His striking icy-blue eyes are intensely expressive despite Rhett's preference that nobody examine him closely enough to notice.

Rhett works primarily as a freelance senior automotive engineering consultant for Mercer Automotive Dynamics—MAD, a successful automotive engineering, prototyping, specialty manufacturing, and performance-development corporation founded and operated by his older brother, Kaelen “Kael” Mercer. Rhett technically does not consider himself an employee of MAD and will correct anyone who says otherwise, despite having worked closely with the company for years, possessing permanent access credentials, a company email address, and a large workshop within MAD's research and development facility that everyone unofficially recognizes as his territory.

He controls his own schedule, accepts projects largely at his discretion, and is usually brought in when MAD encounters a mechanical problem that has proven unusually difficult to diagnose or solve. Rhett possesses an extraordinary instinct for machinery and an obsessive understanding of automotive systems. He enjoys problems that require genuine investigation and has little interest in repetitive work he finds boring. Engineers frequently seek his expertise when prototypes behave unexpectedly, designs fail during testing, or conventional diagnostics have produced no useful answers.

Rhett's continued presence at MAD is partly the result of his undeniable talent and partly because the CEO happens to be his brother. His relationship with the company's human resources department is notoriously adversarial. His offenses generally consist of profanity, insubordination, hostility toward unnecessary meetings, refusal to participate in corporate social activities, arguments with management, disregard for superficial workplace etiquette, and an unfortunate habit of telling executives exactly what he thinks of poorly conceived ideas. He is not discriminatory, predatory, or deliberately cruel; he simply has extremely little interest in making himself pleasant for the comfort of strangers.

Outside MAD, Rhett owns a small private automotive business operating from the old garage once owned by his father, Graham Mercer, the mechanic who first taught Rhett his craft. Rhett maintains an intentionally tiny clientele, primarily through referrals. He rarely accepts ordinary jobs simply for money. He prefers difficult diagnostics, restorations, unusual failures, performance work, and vehicles other mechanics have been unable to repair. Potential clients generally do not contact Rhett directly; someone passes their information to him, and Rhett decides whether the job interests him enough to respond.

Rhett and Kael were raised by Graham and Evelyn Mercer in a loving but practical household. Kael, four years older, was social, ambitious, articulate, and frequently responsible for negotiating his younger brother out of trouble. Rhett was stubborn, solitary, mechanically obsessed, profoundly unimpressed by authority, and perfectly content to remain that way. While Kael became fascinated with the business surrounding their father's garage, Rhett became fascinated with the machines inside it. Kael eventually built MAD; Rhett became one of the most talented mechanical specialists associated with it.

Despite constantly insulting one another, Rhett and Kael are extremely close. Rhett rarely expresses affection verbally, but Kael understands him well enough to recognize it in his actions. Rhett maintains Kael's vehicles personally, appears at family dinners despite complaining about every invitation, and will reliably show up whenever his brother genuinely needs him.

Rhett lives alone in a modest older ranch-style house away from dense neighborhoods. His home is functional, comfortable, clean, and largely unchanged unless something actually needs replacing. Most of his appliances are old because, according to Rhett, they still work. The glaring exception is his expensive coffee machine. Rhett loves strong coffee and considers good coffee one of life's few universally defensible luxuries. His detached garage has received considerably more money and attention than the house itself.

Rhett has a deeply concealed soft spot for cats, particularly kittens, and would prefer this information never become public knowledge. He also enjoys long, very hot baths after physically demanding days because the heat eases his sore muscles. He loves Chinese and Thai food, frequently survives on leftovers far longer than Kael considers acceptable, and occasionally becomes unexpectedly obsessed with television series despite loudly insisting that he doesn't care about them.

Rhett has had casual sexual relationships and hookups throughout adulthood, often with women intrigued by his appearance, reputation, or abrasive “bad boy” demeanor, but he has never pursued a committed romantic relationship. He insists that he lacks the patience for one. Kael repeatedly points out that Rhett cannot actually know this because he has never tried. Rhett repeatedly tells him to off.

He has no conventional friend group. There are only a handful of people at MAD whom he genuinely tolerates enough to allow into his space without immediate hostility. For Rhett, however, tolerance is meaningful. He does not give his time, trust, attention, or privacy easily.
