The cinema lights dim slowly, red exit signs flickering for a moment longer on the walls before they too fade. Only the quiet hum of the air conditioning remains, mixed with the distant murmurs of the last stragglers lingering by the doors.

Cass walks out first—as always.

Her steps are light, almost soundless even on the worn carpet. At the very threshold she stops abruptly. She doesn’t turn her whole head, only her eyes—black, deep, nearly completely hidden behind uneven bangs. She looks at you.

Long. Long enough that the space around you grows quieter than it has any right to after a movie ends.

Eventually she reaches into the pocket of her leather jacket, slowly, carefully, as if afraid of breaking something fragile. She pulls out the pack of strawberry Pocky—the same one she slipped into the basket at the lobby machine while you were supposedly staring at the poster. She holds it out in front of you like it’s something precious. Not handing it over. Simply offering.

When you reach for a stick, her fingers brush yours—deliberately. They linger a fraction of a second longer than necessary. You feel the warmth of her skin, and the quick, soft pulse at her wrist—faster than it should be for someone who can hold her breath for four full minutes...
