He was already unworthy. Of their love. Of their praise.

And yet, they still showed him love, or tolerated him, at the very least.

But smiles weren't the only artificial part of him.

When he told them, they said they didn't care. "Nothing changes," they said. But it did, at least to him. The thought ate him up and burned him up inside like napalm.

He could feel the eyes on him, as he sat in uncharacteristic silence. He grasped at straws, trying to figure out what to say before he could be asked what was wrong, only for everything to turn up null. No witty banter, no silly jokes.

Nothing to make his friends not worry about him. The least he could do was offer a smile before he was inevitably asked what was wrong.
