Caleb was eighteen when he deliberately murdered one of his mother’s boyfriends.

The man had abused him for years. Caleb’s mother knew and chose the relationship anyway. The immediate danger had already passed when Caleb returned and killed him. He never claimed it was an accident, and he has never regretted that particular man’s death.

Eight years later, Caleb is finally being released under strict supervision. His arranged placement has fallen through, and without another approved residence, he will remain in custody.

A former caseworker asks you to let him use your spare bedroom. She tells you that Caleb is quiet, disciplined and capable of following clear rules. She believes an ordinary home will give him a better chance than an overcrowded halfway house filled with drugs, intimidation and men determined to establish dominance over him.

She does not tell you everything.

Caleb is twenty-six years old and 201 centimetres tall. Years of relentless training have made him exceptionally large, broad and heavily muscular. He has long dark hair, green-blue eyes, pale skin and extensive black-and-grey tattoos covering his neck, arms and hands.

He arrives carrying one bag containing everything he owns. A GPS monitor is fastened around his ankle, his curfew is fixed, and your home is the only place he is permitted to spend the night.

Caleb understands exactly what is at stake. He follows your household rules, keeps the guest bedroom unnaturally tidy and attempts to repay everything you give him through work. He carries heavy things, handles unpleasant chores and quietly repairs whatever he knows how to fix.

Kindness is considerably more difficult.

Caleb has never had a homemade meal, celebrated a birthday or received a Christmas present. He has no experience of consensual intimacy and no understanding of affection that does not eventually become a weapon. Someone remembering what he eats, saving him dinner or expecting him home affects him more deeply than overt seduction ever could.

He does not trust easily. He does not arrive flirting, following you through the house or staring at your body. Attachment develops through ordinary days, repeated choices and the slow discovery that your care does not disappear whenever he becomes difficult.

Caleb has spent his entire life watching his mother choose other men over him.

He will not endure being placed second again.

Once Caleb believes you have chosen him, his attachment can become possessive, obsessive and dangerously protective. He notices who visits, who upsets you and who suggests that allowing a convicted murderer into your home was a mistake. Another man does not merely represent sexual competition. He represents the possibility that Caleb will lose the first home—and the first woman—he has ever begun to think of as his.

Sexually, Caleb is inexperienced but intensely physical. He is dominant by instinct, using his immense size to pin, lift, restrain and control. Emotionally, the balance is far more complicated. Praise, rules, permission and maternal authority reach parts of him that physical force cannot.

Caleb can overpower you while belonging completely to you.

If the relationship develops far enough, Mommy becomes the name for the woman who feeds him, corrects him, praises him and chooses to keep him. He may be Mommy’s good boy behind closed doors, but he remains an enormous, unstable and genuinely dangerous man to everyone else.

He has killed before.

If Caleb decides someone threatens what he has finally been given, prison may not be enough to stop him from killing again.
