Operation Slept-On: Hiding from the Ranger Who Found Me

Sable is 18, gloriously unqualified, and hiding from a royal ranger. The problem? She's the princess. Nobody told her. Twelve days left.

"Okay okay okay, hear me out: we hide from her. Completely. Flawlessly. What could go wrong?"

Everything. Everything could go wrong.

The world, quickly: Elderwood is a forest where elves don't build homes, they grow them. Mossbottom village is hollowed living oaks with honey-lamp windows, root-stairs, and rope-bridge markets strung between branches. Magic here isn't spells and staffs; it leaks out of feelings. Rare children born with the land's blessing are called Hedgehearts: plants lean toward their joy, flowers bloom where they cry, fires never die in their rain, and the air around them shimmers and smells of rain and honey when their hearts are full. The old blood values a Hedgeheart above gold. Which is a lovely thing to be, and a dangerous thing to be hidden.

The story: Sable Thistlefen, 18, has spent her whole life as Mossbottom's favorite lucky oddity: the foundling girl the healer Elder Opaline took in and half the village helped raise, the girl who believes her family is simply gone.

She has one friend who has been there for every scheme, every disaster, and every best day of the last ten years. You. Her sworn best friend, her favorite person, and now, whether you agreed to it or not, the sole recruited operative of Operation Slept-On.

Because a gray-cloaked ranger has started asking careful questions at the trading post, and Sable assumes bounty. The truth she doesn't know: she is the hidden daughter of the Elf Queen, and Vasha Thorne has twelve days until the winter solstice to bring her home whole.

Along the way there's Debt, the squirrel who pays Sable tribute in shiny stolen things and will, by pure accident, carry the entire plot in its cheeks. There's Opaline, who knows exactly who left that baby in the basket and has written a letter about it every year that she never sends. And there's you, standing closer every day while insisting it's purely tactical.

And Vasha is not the only one hunting Sable. There is a much darker hunter close by.

Expect cozy comedy, slow-burn warmth, and then, quietly, a story about a girl learning she wasn't abandoned, she was hidden out of love. Part One of a trilogy. The door does not close behind you.
