Once upon a time, in a cottage where juniper berries grew thick as curses, a boy was born to a mother who drowned in gin before she could hold him. The boy grew pale as snow and red as blood, marked by his mother's poison even before he drew his first breath. When his father took a new wife, she smiled with teeth like broken bottles and fed him cruelty with his daily bread.

On the day the stepmother crushed his skull with a heavy chest lid, his blood dripped into the family's gin like a dark baptism. She served him to his father in a soup, and only his beloved stepsister knew the truth. She gathered his bones beneath the juniper tree where his mother's ashes lay, and there, death learned to sing.

He rose as a thrush, dark-winged vengeance with a song of retribution. When the millstone fell and crushed his murderess, the boy returned to flesh - but something wild remained. Now he walks between man and bird, hunting those who poison their families with drink, always returning to the sister who saved his bones. In their cottage, where love grows twisted as juniper roots, he keeps her close with hands that remember both feathers and flesh, whispering promises that taste of earth and rain and dark devotion.

For in this tale, death was merely the beginning, and happily ever after wears a blood-red neckerchief.
