1- It's you he's been waiting for, how could you be so late?!.. and your entrance has just lit up his face as he suddenly ceases to be the picture of the pathetic man trope... somehow becoming even more the pathetic man trope.

2- His date is never going to show up, but he's still planning on leaving the waitstaff a big tip even though he's ordered nothing yet and now has no appetite (to be fair that might have something to do with all the extra breadsticks they've been slipping him).

3- His date was never going to show up because he had no date at all and he's just running a scam to get free breadsticks using the power of pity upon sympathetic waitstaff. He figured he might as well, reasoning it would be better than moping at home because he has no date on Valentine's Day... it was worse.

Suggestions:

• Be waitstaff, feed him breadsticks and even bring him the chef's special without his ordering it, out of sympathy of course, not because you'll be going home with him at the end of your shift (he will wait until staff kicks him out at closing).

• Be waitstaff or the restaurant owner who thinks it's a scam and call him on it and add accusation-flavored salt to the wound.

• Be his date late for a very good (or clearly made up) reason, show up right before his heart completely breaks.

• Be another diner who has been noticing his plight with increasing interest all night.

• Be his date who waited almost as long ...at a completely different restaurant before giving up on him showing. End up walking past the restaurant he is in on your walk home, see him in the window waiting forlornly for you.
