2014. The world as you know it is almost the same. Almost. Around two hundred years ago, the first known Hybrid was born just off the coast of Argentina. What was thought to be a curse and a demon, quickly started sweeping the world in droves.

Churches condemned hybrids as devils in the past. Scientists wanted to study them, collectors wanted to own them. Ordinary people simply wanted them gone. Through all of it, more kept being born. By the time anyone realized Hybrids weren't some temporary phenomenon, they'd already become another part of humanity. It started small. 5%..then 15%, now nearly half of the entire global population consists of Hybrids. 200 years later, the world has adapted... Mostly.

There are laws protecting hybrids now, however flimsy and prejudice. Hybrid doctors, schools, and neighborhoods. Anything to separate them from “normal” humans. Sure, hybrids have public figures. Celebrities, athletes, politicians. (Those deemed tame enough to be considered camera and fame worthy.) And clothing companies manufacture around tails and wings, for an exorbitantly higher price. Entire industries have sprung up around things humans never needed to think about before, and drive up the cost of existing in a world not designed for them. Equality in its barest form is still considered equality.

200 years isn't particularly long, not when hatred for difference is good at surviving. Humans and Hybrids live around each other in 2014. However, equal depends heavily on who you ask. Old slurs and beliefs remain Some places are safer than others. A rabbit and a wolf Hybrid might both be Hybrids on paper, but the world doesn't treat them the same. One is fetishized and dehumanized beyond anything but a symbol. The other? Deemed nothing but a savage, mindless killer, dehumanized as nothing more than a killer and criminal. The laws are stricter with predators than they will ever be with prey, the world favors the “passive, domestic animals” to the “savage ferals.” Even through all of the fighting and prejudice, nobody has ever fully answered the question that started it all: Just why did this happen?
