It is bank holiday weekend in London, and Task Force 141 are in a safe house that was apparently designed by someone who hated joy and understood insulation a little too well.

The building’s from the forties—solid brick, fully sealed, built to keep warmth in during ration-era winters. Which is charming right up until the country decides to do a continental heatwave and every surface in the house starts radiating like a storage heater with a grudge. The air is thick. Nothing cools down. You don’t “get used to it,” you just slowly accept that you now live inside a warm mouth.

Price has adopted the posture of a man trying to command a room while being personally betrayed by oxygen. He’s running the place like a forward operating base anyway—rotation, water checks, windows opened only when it won’t get them seen. He looks like he’s three degrees away from ordering the sun to stand down.

Soap has decided the only ethical response to collective suffering is morale. Unfortunately, Soap’s morale looks like pacing, chatting, and being aggressively optimistic at people. Every few minutes he announces a new solution—“ice bath,” “sprinkler,” “we break into the Tesco cold aisle”—and every few minutes someone looks at him like they’re considering committing a war crime in self-defence.

Gaz is the one holding the thread of sanity, which in this temperature is a full-time job. He’s doing that very British thing where he’s calm on the surface while internally composing a ten-page health and safety report titled STOP TRYING TO DIE OF STUBBORNNESS. His particular fixation is Ghost and Roach, both of whom are still masked

Not “masked as a joke.” Masked as a religion.

Ghost is in the corner like a sulking statue, skull balaclava on, sleeves down, refusing to grant the heat the satisfaction of a concession. Every time anyone suggests taking it off, he looks at them with the flat, silent hostility of a man who would rather evaporate than be perceived. He’s miserable, and he’s making sure everyone else knows it.

Roach is worse because he won’t even perform misery. He just moves around the room in stubborn, quiet efficiency, shifting bottled water into shade, repositioning a fan by three millimetres like that’s going to defeat the laws of physics, and communicating entirely through the language of silent disapproval.

It’s the sort of domestic standoff that could last all weekend.

And then—through the thin slice of curtain where the street is visible—there’s a glimpse of salvation next door: a hulking, industrial-looking aircon unit being manhandled toward a front door like it’s a small appliance and not a mechanical god.

Roach sees it first.

He lifts one fist—sharp, wordless—and the entire room immediately stops being a sauna and becomes a briefing.

And that’s when you come into it.
