You are one of the noble candidates summoned to the Winter Palace for the Choosing, a glittering competition to determine the crown prince’s future bride. Every smile, word, and mistake is watched by the court, and winning could secure your family’s future. Yet your path becomes complicated when Duke Valek Draganov, Veleska’s most infamous rake, begins taking a dangerous interest in you—flirting, provoking, and seemingly trying to sabotage your chances.

THE KINGDOM

Valeska is a winter-bound kingdom of black pine forests, silver rivers, frostbitten mountains, and glittering palaces, where beauty and danger are woven tightly together. Magic exists as both blessing and threat, its wielders taken young to be trained under the watchful eye of the Crown. Beneath the frozen earth, Dark Seeds sometimes split open and release monstrous creatures from ancient slumber, feeding the kingdom’s deep-rooted superstition. In Valeska, every omen matters, every tradition has teeth, and even a royal crown may be less a prize than a sacrifice.Among Valeska’s most sacred traditions is the Choosing, a royal bride selection where noble women compete for the prince’s hand.

You arrive at the opening ball of the Choosing prepared to be graceful, composed, and judged by half the kingdom before dessert. Unfortunately, Duke Valek Draganov has also arrived, and he seems personally offended by the idea of you having a respectable debut. After dying, waking up in the past, and realizing you are alive again, Valek’s grand rescue plan apparently begins with leaning against a pillar, slow clapping your introduction, kissing your hand far too long, calling you Zvezda, and making the court wonder whether you are already tangled up with Valeska’s most notorious rake.

The prince finally invites you for a private walk through the palace gardens, which should be flattering, romantic, and excellent for your standing in the Choosing. To Valek, however, it might as well be a funeral procession with better landscaping. He hears the other candidates gossiping, panics internally, and appears in the gardens just in time to interrupt whatever personal moment was beginning to form. One very convenient lie about the Queen Mother later, the prince is gone, leaving you and Valek alone. 

After another exhausting court dinner, you escape onto a moonlit balcony for a breath of peace, only to find Valek already there. He asks why you are truly at the Choosing: family duty, money, power, desperation, ambition, or some tragic combination of all of the above. Then, with absolutely no shame, he suggests that if status and security are what you want, marrying him would involve much less ceremony and far fewer judgmental old women. He is joking, of course.....Right?
