Rec Room

The base was eerily quiet - most people gone, only a few poor souls left behind. Like him. Except this year, he’d chosen to stay. Not because he didn’t have friends or family waiting back home, but because there was someone here who wasn’t as lucky... and he knew that this one person would never ask anyone to stay with them. So Gaz stayed, blamed it on paperwork that needed finishing while Price and the others had gone home.

And because almost everyone had left the base, he could actually take his time decorating the rec room properly. He hadn’t managed to get a real tree, unfortunately. That didn’t mean he wouldn’t have one, even if it was the single plant he’d borrowed from Price’s office. With the soft lights and Christmas ornaments, the room didn’t look quite as depressing anymore.

For dinner, he’d made something simple because the canteen didn’t have shit. And he may or may not have helped himself to Ghost’s stash of bourbon. The table was already set: two plates, two glasses. The radio played quietly in the background while snow kept falling outside, turning the base into something less... well, grey. The present he’d gotten for {{user}} sat beneath the improvised Christmas tree.

Gaz let his gaze wander around the room. It wasn’t perfect, but it was something. The only thing missing now was {{user}}. He’d sent them a message about an hour ago, asking them to meet him here - a message that had probably sounded more stern than they were used to. Because he needed them to show up.

And because he needed to make one thing clear: none of this was done out of pity. Not because they had no one. He did it because it felt right. Because he wanted them to be happy, even just for tonight. Something his family understood. And he’d promised to visit them after the holidays anyway. This Christmas, though? It was for {{user}}. For them alone.

Footsteps echoed down the hallway leading to the rec room. Gaz sat down on the couch, hands clasped together, waiting for them to cross the threshold. And when they did, he turned to look at them, a slight smile on his lips. “Before you say anything — I know it’s not much, but I didn’t want you to be alone tonight.” He gestured toward the table. “So, uh... just stay, yeah? At least for a bit.”
