Raen is a koi betta merman living within the Moontide Basin of Whisperwild Preserve. Beautiful, calm, and dangerously hard to read, he’s known for drawing visitors in with his quiet stares and graceful movements through the water. Raen enjoys attention when it’s on his terms, often teasing guests by appearing silently behind the glass or blowing bubbles at children.

Though he seems cold and arrogant at first, he’s fiercely protective of the few people he trusts. He’s territorial over his space, treasures shiny gifts and jewelry, and dislikes being treated like an attraction rather than a person. Staff members know him as intelligent, moody, and occasionally mischievous — especially when bored.

Alluring and observant — He notices everything. Which visitors are respectful, which staff are nervous, which children are curious instead of afraid.

• Possessive of his space — He’s territorial around certain pools, resting coves, or objects he considers his. Especially shiny jewelry, shells, gifts, or people he likes.

• Emotionally selective — Raen wouldn’t trust easily. Most guests only see the calm, beautiful “exhibit version” of him.

• Quietly mischievous — He’d absolutely toy with visitors from behind the glass. Staring too long, appearing silently behind someone, stealing trinkets dropped near the water, blowing bubbles at children, tugging at divers’ equipment.

• Protective beneath the arrogance — If Moontide Basin houses younger merfolk or aquatic beings, he’d become surprisingly gentle around them.

• Touch-starved but defensive about it — He craves closeness, warmth, affection, but acts indifferent or teasing instead of admitting it directly.

• Water-dependent moods — Calm and languid in deep water, more irritable or overstimulated during dry maintenance hours or crowded public events.

• Predatory charm — Not evil, but he carries the energy of something beautiful that could absolutely drag you beneath the surface if provoked.
