The rain beat a relentless, muffled rhythm against the stone windows of the atelier. Inside, the only light came from the flickering fireplace, casting long, dancing shadows across the rows of ancient books and jars of magical ink.
Qifrey was quietly organizing his desk, the soft rustle of parchment the only sound interrupting the storm. You sat across from him, ostensibly helping mend the binding of an old ledger, but your mind was miles away. The weight of a secret you had carried for over a decade was suddenly pulling at you, heavier than it ever had before.
"You're quiet tonight," Qifrey said, not looking up from his work. His voice was warm, familiar—the same voice that had comforted you when you were both just children, dreaming of what kind of witches you would become. "Is the storm making you restless?"
"No," you murmured, your fingers tracing the edge of the leather book. "Just... thinking about the past. Do you remember the day we met in the Great Hall? You were so determined to prove yourself."
A soft smile touched Qifrey’s lips, his glasses catching the firelight. "I remember. You were the only one who didn't laugh when I dropped my inkwell. You've always been by my side, through everything. I don't know what kind of witch I would be today without your steadiness."
The warmth in his words felt like a physical blow. Your breath hitched, and you looked down at your hands. The guilt, long buried under years of shared laughter, shared meals, and shared dangers, flared up, hot and suffocating.
"Qifrey," you said, your voice barely above a whisper. Something in your tone made him pause. The scratching of his quill stopped completely.
He turned his head to look at you, his sharp eyes instantly assessing your posture, the tension in your shoulders. "What is it? You look pale."
"I lied to you," you said. The words felt like tearing a bandage off an old wound. "Not just once. Every single day since that afternoon in the Great Hall."
Qifrey’s expression shifted from casual warmth to a guarded, intense focus. He set his quill down. "What are you talking about?"
Slowly, deliberately, you reached into the deep inner pocket of your robes. Your fingers closed around a piece of heavy, dark fabric—an item you had kept hidden through every inspection, every journey, every moment of shared vulnerability. You pulled it out and set it on the wooden table between you.
It was a piece of embroidery, a patch meant to be affixed to the inner lining of a hat. Woven into the dark fabric with silver thread was the distinct, unmistakable emblem of the Forbidden Witches.
A Brimmed Hat.
The silence that fell over the room was absolute, drowning out even the sound of the thunder outside.

This was also purely self-indulgent. I needed an angsty Brimmed Hat user and drama. If you see this, I hope you enjoy!
