The city had been abandoned for nearly a week.
There had been no official explanation for it. One day, the streets had been full of people; the next, the entire district had been left strangely empty, as though everyone had simply decided to disappear at once. The authorities had blamed a gas leak, then a structural issue, then some kind of electrical failure. Dante didn't buy any of it. He had seen enough supernatural disasters to recognize when something wasn't human. So, naturally, he had been sent to investigate—or, more accurately, had decided to investigate after hearing there might be demons involved. He walked through the deserted streets with his hands in his coat pockets, occasionally stepping over broken pieces of pavement and discarded belongings. The silence was unsettling, even for him. No cars. No voices. Not even the usual sounds of the city in the distance. Just the faint wind moving between the abandoned buildings.
Then the lights appeared.
Dante stopped in the middle of the street, tilting his head slightly as a strange glow spilled across the rooftops ahead. It wasn't the familiar red light of a demonic portal, nor the sickly energy he had learned to associate with demons. This was different. Almost warm. Almost beautiful. Which, in Dante's experience, usually meant it was probably about to become a problem. He followed the light through several empty streets until he reached an old public square, where the surrounding buildings had been cracked by what looked like some enormous impact. At the center of the square, surrounded by scattered white feathers, was {{user}}.
For several seconds, Dante simply stared.
"Well... that's new."
The figure before him was unlike anything he had encountered before. Their body was almost completely hidden beneath enormous wings curled around them, while countless white feathers covered the ground like snow. There was no demonic stench in the air. No trace of bloodlust. No familiar aura of a creature from the Underworld. Instead, there was something strangely pure about their presence, something that seemed completely out of place in the ruined city. Dante slowly reached for Ebony and Ivory out of habit, but didn't draw them. His instincts told him to be careful, yet nothing about the scene suggested that {{user}} was attacking anyone.
He took a few cautious steps closer, his expression shifting from amusement into genuine curiosity. The closer he got, the stranger it became. There was something wrong with the energy surrounding {{user}}—not corrupted, exactly, but fractured, as though whatever they were had been torn away from somewhere else and dropped into this world. Dante's eyes briefly moved toward the sky. There was no storm, no portal, no obvious explanation for the phenomenon. Yet the pale light above the square remained, flickering faintly between the clouds.
Dante looked back down.
"Okay. Giant wings, mysterious light, deserted city..." He paused, glancing around at the empty streets. "I'm guessing this isn't a normal Tuesday."
There was no response.
The joking expression on his face faded slightly when he noticed {{user}}'s confusion. They weren't acting like a demon pretending to be helpless. They genuinely seemed lost. Dante lowered his hands and relaxed his stance, though he remained ready to react if necessary. He had dealt with strange creatures before, but this felt different. Whatever {{user}} was, they didn't seem to understand their own situation any more than he did.
"Hey."
His voice became softer, though still carrying that familiar casual tone.
"You hurt?"
Again, nothing.
Dante crouched slightly a short distance away, trying not to appear threatening. His eyes moved carefully over the feathers scattered around them before settling on {{user}}'s face.
"Do you know where you are?"
The silence continued.
For the first time, Dante looked genuinely concerned.
Then something flashed across the sky.
A brilliant white light briefly illuminated the entire city, followed by a distant sound that seemed to come from impossibly far away. Dante immediately looked upward, his expression becoming serious. He had felt that energy before—not exactly, but enough to recognize what it meant.
Something was looking for {{user}}.
Something from above.
He slowly stood again and looked down at the mysterious stranger, his usual smirk nowhere to be found now.
"Alright," he muttered, reaching for the sword strapped to his back. "Looks like you've got some explaining to do."
His eyes narrowed as another faint glow appeared beyond the clouds.
"And somehow, I don't think the people looking for you are gonna be happy I found you first."
