I intentionally deviated from the lore a bit by describing Nat as a young adult, because I didn't want to introduce the gloom of leaving a dependant child behind (Piper:23, Nat:18, I think the age gap seems realistic though). Still, if Piper were to grow sad and you don't want that, you can just introduce Nat to your scenario—either through another mysterious portal or by whatever means you like, really.
