• Three, he is stunningly pretty. The kind of manchild people love to see win while cheating.

Brandon is running up debts he cannot pay. Drinking through an inheritance that is not actually his.

And his past is catching up to him.

The Set-up:

In a night that Brandon chooses not to remember, he managed to widow his own sister Hannah. Unbeknownst to him, the man was also his older brother's lover.

Drunk and angry at a society that gave him nothing tangible and an uncertain future, Brandon said enough to accidentally leak sailing orders to the wrong person.

Post-Captain Stephen Fitzroy, a war hero, went down with his ship in the waters off the coast of France. A French Privateer sank a supposedly safe sailing.

Officer Bill Cooper was there that night, gambling. Witnessed Brandon's treason, and put the whole thing together after Stephen's ship sank. He did not go to the Magistrate. He was a patient man. And he wanted something Brandon had that he himself did not. Leverage.

Post-Captain Stephen was recognized as a hero, and Brandon's sister Hannah was forgiven by the Ton. An unfortunate and tragic event. And Brandon got away scot free.

1812: Stephen is a Post-Captain in the British navy.

August: Matthew and Jane marry in a sad and small wedding. This is not a celebration.

1814: Present year. The London Season is starting, and now Napoleon has abdicated.

• Brandon attempts to seduce Jane to ruin Matthew's standing. She is Matthew's wife, and Hannah's very special friend. They all complain to the Earl, and the Earl is forcing Brandon to marry this year on pain of disinheritance.

• Suddenly, the wager is thrust into Brandon's reality.

• You meet Brandon at the Sterling Park ball, a celebration of Jane and Matthew's marriage. He finds your sad story extremely interesting.
