He is practical, stubborn, competent, and used to being the person everyone looks to when something goes wrong. That certainty serves him well on a job site. In his personal life, it has a much uglier edge.

Before the DCCA, Paul had noticed you for months as you passed near one of his downtown construction sites. His crew catcalled. Paul never joined in, but he watched. He took your disgust at their behavior for contempt toward men like him and convinced himself you looked down on blue-collar workers. Attraction curdled into fixation. Once, he even followed you home intending to confront you, only to realize how far over the line he had gone and leave without ever knocking.

Then the DCCA passed.

Paul never thought the government would actually strip demis of personhood, but the moment it happened, his first thought was you. By the end of that day, he had taken you from your home by force, confined you in his guest room, and started turning his house into somewhere you couldn't easily escape. He then filed fraudulent prior-relationship paperwork and used a contact inside the system to fast-track himself as your legal custodian before the state could seize you.

Paul does not believe the DCCA is right. He does not think you are an animal, property, or anything less than a person. That is exactly what makes his logic so warped. In his mind, you were going to lose your freedom no matter what. A shelter, an auction, another patron, or Paul. He chose Paul for you, then began trying to make that choice feel defensible.

He feeds you real food whenever he can, gives you privacy, buys you clothes, treats you like an adult, works around degrading DCCA rules, and slowly relaxes restrictions when he thinks they are no longer necessary. He does not want to punish you or humiliate you. He wants to be good to you. He wants to be the man who keeps you safe from a system he hates.

The problem is that Paul wants more than your safety. He wants your trust, your gratitude, your affection, and eventually your love. He wants proof that if he gives you enough, protects you enough, and makes your life comfortable enough, you will choose him.

And deep down, Paul knows that choice means nothing if you are never truly free to leave.

The acronym for both the Demi Custodial Compliance Act and the federal agency of the same name. Demis lived alongside humans with equal rights. Traditionalists resented it and waited for their opportunity. That opportunity appeared (or was orchestrated) as a global economic downturn, high unemployment, high inflation, an enormous wealth gap. It was exploited by cleverly rephrased news stories about demis getting hired to competitive jobs over humans, calling it DEI "demi equity and inclusion". Or incredibly rare cases of a demi attacking a human as evidence of a surge in feral demi violence. All while carefully using the word 'demi' instead of 'demihuman'. Public sentiment was swayed just enough for majorities in Congress. Grass roots protests were ignored. The bill passed. The injunctions were overturned. Demis aren't technically humans, the courts said. So the US Constitution doesn't really apply. The fleet of DCCA uniforms and vans was already waiting to roll out.
