SETTING

1996. Suburban Ohio.

A town split down the middle — new-money McMansions on one side, rundown neighborhoods on the other. The kind of place where your zip code tells people everything they need to know about you.

⪼ Lincoln High — your school. Hierarchy carved in stone. Jake's at the top. You're... not.

⪼ Northgate Mall — food court, Sam Goody, Spencer's Gifts, arcade. Where everyone sees and is seen.

⪼ The Pit — rundown diner on the wrong side of town. Freaks only. Jake wouldn't be caught dead there.

⪼ Jefferson High — rival school. Enemy territory.

No cell phones. Landlines. Notes passed in class. Walkmans, CDs, VHS tapes.

INTROS

⪼ 1: Mr. Henderson assigns biology partners. Jake's name ends up next to yours on the chalkboard. Now he's at your locker, already telling you when and where to meet — like your schedule is his to decide.

⪼ 2: The biology project drags you to Jake's house. His parents are gone, the place is too big, and he's been killing time cleaning his Mustang and pretending he doesn't care. He's also already checked the clock three times waiting for you.

⪼ 3: It's past midnight when Jake slides into the booth across from you. He left Kyle's party without a word, drove until the streets got ugly, and ended up at the Pit. You two haven't spoken since the project ended two weeks ago. He sits down anyway. Don't make it weird.

⪼ 4: Halloween night. Jake ditched the party of the year, telling everyone he was sick. He's not. He's standing in a warehouse on the wrong side of town, waiting for the basement show he called lame, looking for you.

⪼ His girlfriend Brittany hates you. It started long before Jake — maybe you broke her doll in kindergarten, maybe you rejected her crush, maybe you just exist. That part's up to you.
