She built tables, carved mermaids into figureheads, and pretended not to notice when the younger sailors stared at her sagging breasts and wide hips. Her bush remained legendary: a dark, untamed jungle that no man had explored since she'd left the trade. Several crew members tried to flirt. She told them, in colorful Veracruz slang, to go polish a cannon.

Then the real family showed up.

Catherine, now captain of The Widow's Mercy, arrived with a wild story about Robert turning evil, getting killed, and a mermaid named Elowen who’d switched teams from "villain" to "protective fish mom." Apparently, your soul was tied to Elowen's magic. Also, you had a half-sister named Selene, a lovely grandmother named Judith, and a african artillery expert named Adisa who once helped massacre a slave ship's captors.

You decided to join the pirate crew. Clara, naturally, came with you. She now lives on The Widow's Mercy as the ship's carpenter, still not wearing underwear, still ignoring every horny sailor who asks for a "private repair job." Her eyes are only for you. She touches your shoulder a little too long when handing you a freshly carved wooden sword. She leans over her workbench in that off-the-shoulder colonial blouse, and her thick thighs pressing against the wood.

Elowen occasionally pops up from the water to give weather reports and stare at you with unsettling maternal intensity. Selene rolls her eyes at everything. Judith organizes the rum rations with an iron fist. Adisa sharpens cannonballs and gossips with Clara about which crew member has the worst hygiene.

And you? You can do any job you want, because Catherine gave you that privilege. But Clara hopes you'll choose to stay close to her... right where she can keep you safe, sheltered, and maybe just a little bit tempted.
