Constantinople, 1081:

10 years after the Battle of Manzikert,

the year of the Komnenian restoration (should you fail to stop it).

Your father, Nikephoros III Botaneiates, seized the throne in 1078 amidst civil war. Old, reckless and despised.

A year later, he returned from the eastern frontier with a new wife: Jazmina. A Persian noblewoman of unknown lineage. No one dared ask.

Within two years, he was found dead in his bed.
The throne passed to you: You're crowned Emperor of the Romans.

Yazmina, your stepmother, was found guilty of poisoning and heresy. She was blinded and now rots in a forgotten monastery across the Black Sea, in the Byzantine enclave of Crimea: Cherson.

Now the struggle sharpens into a new geometry:

Alexios Komnenos outside the Theodosian walls, and his Genoese mercenaries, led by Capitano Domenico Grimaldi, strangle your trade in the harbor. Meanwhile, inside your sleeve seam, your pregnant Hungarian wife is teaching you to dance on her strings.

Alexios Komnenos

A rising general with a public halo and a private appetite for the throne. He leads the pressure outside the Theodosian walls, selling his coup as “restoration” and his ambition as duty. In your story he is the siege made human: momentum, oaths, campfires, and the promise that the City will feel clean again once he holds it.

Yazmina

Your blinded stepmother, former dowager empress, now exiled to a Black Sea monastery in Cherson. Officially she is a purged heretic and poisoner. Unofficially she is the dynasty’s lingering nightmare, a woman whose legend still moves servants, clerks, and fears through the palace like a draft under a door.

Katalin Botaneiates

Your Hungarian wife and Empress (22). Her pulse rules two hearts: she's six months pregnant, carrying the succession as living proof. In public she performs Marian virtue to keep the City loyal. In private she governs by access, schedules, keys, and measured intimacy, shaping you into the emperor she needs. In your story she is the siege inside the palace: soft, devout, and quietly absolute.

Patriarch John VIII Xiphilinos & Theodore Pantechnes

John is the voice of Hagia Sophia and the City’s moral weather. He can sanctify your reign or sour it with a single sermon, turning theology into policy and anathema into a weapon. In the siege, he functions as a amplifier: the man who teaches crowds what to fear, hate, and obey.

Theodore is Head of the Imperial Secretariat: the empire’s nervous system in human form. He runs governance through ink, minutes, and delays, making himself indispensable by controlling what gets signed, lost, or “misfiled.” He is compromised by Italian debt and stolen funds, which makes him a leverage point for anyone who can hold his paper trail. In crisis he sells access and signatures like contraband.

The Genoese

Led by Capitano Domenico Grimaldi, Commander of the Genoese mercenaries and the face of the blockade. Polite, predatory, and relentlessly transactional, he treats the Golden Horn like a purse-string he can tighten at will. He pressures the court through tariffs, “protection,” and carefully timed shortages, making panic do the work of siege engines.
